That's a first.
Obama: 'Planned Parenthood Is Not Going Anywhere'
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/26/obama-planned-parenthood-_n_3163522.html
President Barack Obama became the first sitting president Friday to address Planned Parenthood's national conference, where he reassured the organization and its supporters that he will continue to fight on their behalf.
"When politicians try to turn Planned Parenthood into a punching bag, they're not just talking about you," he told the crowd of 1,200. "They're talking about the millions of women you serve. When they talk about cutting off your funding, let's be clear: Theyre talking about telling many of those women, 'You're on your own.' They're talking about shutting those women out at a time when women need it most, shutting off communities that need more health care options for women, not less."
Obama was originally scheduled to address Planned Parenthood's annual gala Thursday night, but he rescheduled the speech in order to attend a memorial service in West, Texas. The scheduling change fueled some speculation that Obama was distancing himself from the family planning provider, but he dispelled those rumors Friday.

(53,661 posts)They have tried these lousy tricks to shut the government down repeatedly since 2010 because they know he won't agree. It's been a game they've been playing with women's lives far too long.

(3,289 posts)Planned Parenthood is one of the only organizations I donate to. Can't send much but on my meager income I still feel it is important to support an organization that helps so many women that otherwise could not receive proper healthcare or advice. And the PP decal on my car, pissing off my conservative friends, is an added bonus.

(25,111 posts)organization that was originally started by Richard Nixon. GOPers can give a shit about anyone's personal health expect their immediate family and the rich. Fuck them.

(90,556 posts)... nearly 100 years ago. She was a public health nurse who saw the great suffering of women and their families when women could not control their own fertility. For her efforts to educate women and provide them with safe and effective means of birth control, she was jailed for obscenity.
There's more here:

For her courage, vision, and intelligence, she is without question one of the heroes of the 20th century.
For many decades, mainstream Protestants and Jews were all in favor of family planning, with no divide along party lines as far as I know. All the old-generation and moderate Republicans were in favor of Planned Parenthood back when. (That may be why you thought of Nixon, though he had nothing whatever to do with its founding.)
It was only when the Evangelicals/fundamentalists were radicalized by Roe vs Wade, and then embraced by the GOP, that this deep party divide came about. Tainted by hysteria over abortion, the topic became toxic for Democratic politicians, and since in the media-mind the anti-choicers had seized the moral high-ground, that was reinforced.
Most Democratic politicians with national aspirations became afraid to pay more than lip-service to family planning, much less choice on the abortion issue. They became cowards.
It is in this context that President Obama's decision to go high-profile in his support of the venerable and embattled organization Planned Parenthood shows political courage, and is to be applauded.

(193 posts)Now if he'd deliver an address on reasons the US should be subject to the International Criminal Court, I'll support him for an unconstitutional third term.
