Why we must act now (*WARNING: Graphic images below)

By Justin Wedes, Occupy The NRA

*WARNING: Graphic images below

Washington, DC – Brishell Jones was 16 when she was gunned down by an AK-47 rifle on the corner of South Capitol Street in Washington, D.C. She was on her way to the funeral of another friend, Jordan Howe, killed just days earlier by gunfire.

Tears welled up in my eyes as I spoke with Brishell’s mother, Nardyne Jones, a few nights ago. Though it’s been three years since her daughter’s death, the pain in her voice was evident as she mustered up the courage to do what she was about to do: she wanted the world to see the photo of her precious daughter taken from her.

I want the world to see this photo.

It disturbs me deeply, but I know the world must see it.

This is what she showed me:

This should be a moment of raw anger and deep, piercing regret for all of us.

We should be demanding action from our government if it’s still ours.

And from ourselves.

If you’re a mother, a father, a grandmother, a cousin, a brother, a sister – don’t look away.

Don’t look away from Brishell. Don’t look away from Nardyne.

Don’t grieve in silence anymore!

Justin Wedes is an educator & community activist living in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. He is appealing to anyone with a story of how gun violence affected their life to be brave and share it. Email occupythenra@gmail.com or contact us on Facebook or Twitter to speak out.

empathy and no consciences. It is our society and we decide on what we want. We can interpret the Constitution and/or change it. 80% of the American public want more gun controls. The 1% and the gun-nuts dont. And they have guns.

I've got to have my guns, and if the price for that is the mutilated bodies of children then so be it. Whether they're much-loved teens or adorable first graders, matters not to me. Got to have my guns.

Yeah, very comparable.

Drug control works in Japan. So does gun control.

Drug control is an abysmal failure here. I leave finishing the analogy as an exercise for the reader.

Akin to the post-Apocalyptic outback in Mad Max, where people need to heavily arm themselves to defend against the morlocks who crave human flesh.

You'll need to take that into account when replying.

I haven't seen this kind of thing, the media is being paid to not show it and instead Hollywood puts out images and scenes that would make one think guns are not as dangerous as they are.

Whatever details the picture is really showing us, we need to be shown what happens to real flesh and blood people. It's a crime people are walking freely around with the kind of guns that make it too easy to kill this child or others.

As Obama said, it's not about someone 'being in the wrong place at the wrong time.' He said that they were in the right place, at the right time, doing what everyone had a right to do - walk the street, be at school or work, whatever.

I am glad this woman wanted people to know so that people cannot hide behind their 'right' to own a small weapon of mass destruction in our communities.

Such a tragedy for this woman, and what could have been. A child trying to help heal others by going to the memorial of another victim of gun violence - seldom covered in the media, as if their lives meant nothing!

of the incisions that open the chest. Bullets rip and shred children's skin, this looks like a clean incisions from a scalpel. The fabric that surrounds her, I can not explain. The Y incisions are closed before the diseased leaves the autopsy table.

Bless you, Nardyne Jones, for your courage! All Americans must see the realities of the deaths caused by the republicans, the NRA and the gun manufacturers. This beautiful girl, Brishell Jones, deserved to live her life.

She is so beautiful.

for this mother and all the victims of violence. Many people have attended the funerals of the slain, but the media still pretends nothing is wrong. We should enact laws to make all of these lives longer. The right to life is first.

Even though I agree on the gun issue at hand... The picture is not of gunshot wounds at all.. This is a typical autopsy photo from the top chest cavity up through the head. What you see is the Top of he Y shaped incision to open the chest cavity. It peels the top layers of dermis back creating what you see as a very messy picture.... Behind her head is the section of fat removed from under the sternum, usually placed to the right if the person doing the autopsy... These are not a pic of GSW's

and still so beautiful, even in the middle of her autopsy.

But, in a way I understand your point. Americans should be forced to look at the CRIME SCENE PHOTOS of all children killed by gun violence.

Shot after attending the funeral of her friend who had been shot a few days before. Awful. DC's worst mass shooting in decades, and an hours-long car chase. Plus they killed another boy to take his pistol to use in the shooting.

The Post did some great coverage of the lead-up to this tragedy:

This timeline tells a lot of the story, too:

But I think it is unlikely that the actions of criminals or mentally ill who misuse firearms will compel very many lawful gun owners to give them up.

that the wounds are awful... and I've seen many. But as a forensic pathologist, I must say that the photo appears to depict the top of the Y-Shaped incision done to conduct the autopsy; and it's possible, though hard to tell, that at least one of the "wounds" behind the victim's left ear is part of the incision made to examine the skull and ultimately the brain.

so its hard to tell if she is on the way TO or from an autopsy, one would hope she was cleaned up before her parents saw her, as bullets do these grevious things. Imagion the Newton children.
