I ran a curve on it to brighten it, and it is clear that Obama's arm is on Bush's chair.

Post before edit:
I very much doubt it is photoshopped. Obama is capable of having fun and they are all laughing.

It's not from the angle of the formal photo. Lots of other points of analysis too, not the least of which is that somebody would have had to photograph Obama's hand making that gesture in that light.

You have to very carefully measure things like shadows from other parts so you can gauge angles and distances. You have to account for some parts being closer to lights. Some parts will be closer to the wall than others. It devolves from an understanding of the rays of light and the clues they leave.

It was meant to indicate that the person in the photo was either an insect or a Martian. It was a joke, meant in good fun. You didn't put antennae on someone you didn't like.

several preliminary shots that then subsequently got leaked. Times are much more playfully informal than they used to be.

I was just amused because I see people doing that gesture all the time, but with absolutely NO awareness of its meaning.

Even if someone imagines that the gesture refers to bunny ears, then why doesn't anyone wonder why it would ever become a "thing" to always give someone else bunny ears in a photo?

President Obama, being an educated and well read man, no doubt knows that gesture means "putting horns on the cuckold". Being a gentleman he wouldn't, as you say, insult Mrs Bush.

Bright socks with a suit also happen to be in fashion. On Graham Norton's show a couple of weeks ago, all the men were wearing red socks with their dark suits.
