In pursuit of this goal, Google has assiduously cultivated an image as a new style of company — cool, hip, enlightened and compassionate, so different to nasty capitalist enterprises of the past.


But this is all a shallow public relations illusion. The firm should be judged by its actions, not by its own pious self-serving rhetoric

Nothing could be further from the truth. For all Schmidt’s bluster, when it comes to tax avoidance, Google is one of the most serious corporate offenders — far worse than the coffee chain Starbucks, which has been so heavily condemned in recent months.

That is the only thing that matters in that entire article.

Any company that pays MORE in taxes than it must would not be a responsible company. Change the laws please but do not complain when a company FOLLOWS the law and avoids taxes.

Those who have the most to gain influence the legislative process to stack the laws in their favor. You're right, of course, but Google and their like will fight tooth and nail to prevent changing the law. The only solution is to remove their influence.
