Saxton has never directly threatened anyone in particular, and his language has been general enough that he isnt targeting a particular person, White said. However, a university attorney was contacted to discuss the situation.
We find it to be vulgar and vile, White said. However, it is protected speech. He has yet to, at this point, violate the student code of conduct.
Saxton, a junior studying classics and religious studies, said his sermon was meant to convey that if you dress like a whore, act like a whore, youre probably going to get raped.
I think that girls that dress and act like it, Saxton said, they should realize that they do have partial responsibility, because I believe that theyre pretty much asking for it.
Saxtons sermon came ahead of the Take Back the Night event held Tuesday night, which aims to unite people against sexual violence. He said his decision to create the sign and display it was tied to the event and to the fact that April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

The offender here:
Brother Dean Saxton (left), a junior studying classics and religious studies, preaches about rape at Heritage Hill on Tuesday afternoon.
The counterpoints here:
Josh Solomon (center), a computer science sophomore, as well as Gregor Orbino (right), a political science junior, serve as counterpoints.
Emboldening, description, italics and paragraphing for attention are my addition. I can't read the counterpoints' signs though, and am curious why the offensive one is being allowed to do this - it wouldn't have happened in the liberal era of my public university years.
But this is the same state where a game at a school was called off when a boy's team from a private school refused to play against girls. They forfeited the game. And we still don't have the ERA...

(2,074 posts)So, according to this young idiot I'm supposed to believe that my great grand aunt asked to be raped. She was 76 years old when she was brutally raped by a gang of teenage boys, murdered, and thrown down a well. I was 16 when she was murdrered, and her story is one of the dark stories in my family, and it terrified me. Just like I was terrified when, in college, our economics professor somewhat gleefully informed the young women in the class that at least 1 in 3 of us can look forward to being raped in our lifetimes (this was in South Africa in the 1980s). Just as I was terrified that ONE time during my college years when I could not get a ride to my dorm after dark, and had to run, alone, through the streets of my college town. I guess that is kind of the point of rape, isn't it? To terrify women.
We all know that nuns, women in burkas, babies, young children, old women, fat women, thin women, women with warts on their faces, fashion models, prostitutes, college students, young women dressed in mini skirts, young women dressed in conservative clothing, middle aged women, mothers, straight women, gay women, bi women, and your neighbor's daughter, are all potential rape victims. Anybody who thinks that rape is about sexuality, is wrong. It is about power over women (and sometimes over children, and sometimes over more vulnerable men). It is about power, about showing who is boss. It's got nothing to do with a woman dressing provocatively.
And so is this young man's language. It's about saying who he thinks is boss, who gets to call the shots. It's about control.

(2,074 posts)Thanks all for the kind words. Her death happened about 27 years ago, and I was not super close to her, so the fact of her death has long been accepted, but the way she died was really frightening. It was also a shock at the time to learn that one of the perpetrators was a 13 year old boy - the humiliation to her as an old woman felt even worse with that fact, and what they did with her body made it even worse. In South Africa (which has some of the highest rates of sexual violence in the world) such stories are unfortunately all too common, and made worse by race politics, trauma from our political past, poverty, high rates of alcoholism, and so forth. But such stories are all too common all over the world, and it appears that rates of sexual violence are directly correlated with patriarchal values. (I did some research on this for my dissertation, which dealt with the relationship between certain Christian doctrines and violence against women.) The more a culture believes that women are inferior, or subject to male control, or are to be submissive, the higher the cultural tolerance for sexual violence, and indeed the rates of sexual violence (although statistics are difficult to interpret due to a variety of factors).
I was very shocked one day when a cousin of mine and her husband (whom I otherwise liked) remarked that a woman who had been raped (it was a news story at the time if I remember right) had been partly to blame because she had been sleeping around anyway. Pretty much what this idiot boy is saying. I felt sick.

(33,023 posts)In journalism, editors and reporters inevitably confront ethical dilemmas.
From national stories about bombing suspects to local stories about
incendiary student preachers, journalists must consider how stories
will affect their audiences.
But of course, theyre called dilemmas because they are multi-faceted
and deeply complicated.
On Wednesday, the Arizona Daily Wildcat published a story about a student
preacher in front of the Administration building, and the campus response to him.
The student, Dean Saxton also known as Brother Dean Samuel,
a junior studying classics and religious studies held a sign that read
You deserve rape, which drew heated criticism from onlookers.
Many filed written complaints or called the Dean of Students Office.

This same kind of twisted logic is why women in islam have to cover themselves from head to toe. It is somehow their fault if a man sees to much of them and decides she's 'asking for it'. What do you want to bet this guy probably hates islam and claims to be against it? Got news for him; he more like islam than he cares to admit. But, I'll never forget how some of the customers would be so judgmental of the girls, but still be our regulars. Many of them expressed actual contempt for the strippers, angrily asking how they could debase themselves doing the work they did, but it didn't keep them from coming back over and over again and getting obsessed at times with a certain girl. It's a form of self-hatred and projection. They blame the object of their lust for the way they feel. No one dragged them into the club at gunpoint. Rape Myths and Facts
What do statements like she really wanted it, no way he was assaulted and hos like that deserve it have in common? Theyre all rape mythsand theyre just a few of the stereotypical, prejudicial and generally false beliefs people have about rape and sexual assault.
Rape myths exist for a number of historical and cultural reasons, including gender role expectations, acceptance of violence and misinformation about sexual assault, and theyre one reason why so many rape victims are shamed into remaining silent.
The best way to confront a rape myth when you hear one is honestly. And to do that, you have to know the facts.
Myth: Rape and sexual assault are about sexual attraction and gratification.
Fact: Rape and sexual assault are all about control and domination.
Myth: A healthy person can resist being raped or sexually assaulted.
Fact: According to the Centers for Disease Control, 1 out of every 6 adult women has been a victim of rape, and approximately 92,700 men are raped in the U.S. each year. Healthy and strong people are raped every day. Rape victims are doctors, lawyers, nurses, military personnel, cooks, accountants, studentsanyone and everyone could be vulnerable to rape or sexual assault.
Myth: When it comes to sex, men can be provoked to a point of no return.
Fact: Men are physically able to stop at any point during sexual activity. Rape is not an act of impulsive, uncontrollable passion; it is a premeditated act of violence. Research shows that 50% of rapes are planned.
Myth: If a woman goes to her dates room on the first date, it implies she is willing to have sex.
Fact: Nothing is ever implied. Date rapes comprise 50 to 75% of all reported rapes. The best way to prevent a bad situation is to communicate. If things get hot and heavy and youre not sure what the other person wants, just ask. Some people feel talking may ruin the mood. But doing something without consent is rapeand thats a real mood killer!
Myth: Rape is usually violent and involves a stranger.
Fact: Actually around 73% of all rapes and 90% of rapes on college campuses are committed by someone the victim knows. Many rapes involve force or the threat of force, but some rapes are committed when the victim is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or even asleep! Sex against someones will is rape under any circumstances.
Myth: When a woman dresses provocatively, shes asking for trouble.
Fact: Rapists look for easy, vulnerable targets. Thinking that women provoke attacks against them by the way they dress transfers blame from the perpetrator to the victim. Research shows that this particular myth helps others feel better because they think that rape couldnt happen to them.

(758 posts)hatred of women. If he's willing to go public with such an offensive sign, I can only imagine what goes on in the deeper recesses of his warped mind.
