Meet Omar Borkan Al Gala. He's a photographer, actor, and poet from Dubai and he was one of the men kicked out of Saudi Arabia because he's really, really ridiculously good looking. Are you now using your T-Mobile Sidekick as a stop-gap masturbatory aid until you get home? Or are you already dry humping your computer tower?
Saudi Arabia's Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vices deported three men all delegates from the United Arab Emirates in town for the Jenadrivah Heritage and Cultural Festival because the commission was afraid women would get naked and writhe in the streets at the very thought of throwing themselves on these tempters. That, or as some are speculating, because Saudi Arabia wanted to punish the UAE for allowing one of their provocative lady artists to attend the fest.

But I'm not looking at this beautiful creature in this post as something to 'do', I'm just looking at a beautiful piece of art - of how nature sometimes structures perfection in some beholding eyes.

(47,209 posts)and looking at a professional image of a MODEL and discussing it online is kind of huge, isn't it?
Also, there's a huge difference between judging a model's looks VS an attorney general, isn't there?
If you were both in the entertainment business, it would be okay to say how smoking hot a person is- because it's their job. They actually do work really hard and spend a lot of time and money to maintain their weight, muscle, skin, everything. But no one should ever assume the average coworker really wants your unsolicited opinion of their face or body- it's too personal, rude, and invites others to gaze a bit too hard as if it's some kind of contest.
It's not so difficult to understand the difference- why pretend these situations are in any way similar?
Bonobo

(47,209 posts)"compliments" (i.e. intrusive remarks) are not welcomed or enjoyed by women you don't or barely know- especially in the workplace. THAT is what has been the subject of many threads here.
Models put their faces and bodies out there for public perusal. The work is supposed to provoke a reaction to the image. That's part of the bargain.
Most models do hate the part when folks in real life, *not their colleagues* go up to them to critique their face and body. Because its their job, and they aren't working for you, and they hate to pretend that they give a fuck what random people think of their looks. Just like most regular women do.
Do men get directly critiqued on their looks constantly? Or are they more often the ones misguidedly thinking their evaluations are somehow welcome?

The Straight Story
(48,121 posts)If he was then commenting on his looks would be oppression. Or sexism.
Why can't people just look at everyone the same and not talk about looks, hair, birds they are carrying, etc???
We all look the same when you rip off our skin and bones and get down to the skeleton. Saying someone is good looking when you don't say it about all means you think some people are not as good looking at others...which is bad.
Now I know some people have said Obama is better looking than bush - but that is wrong. You cannot, should not ever, comment on the looks of others (ok...you can if they are men because they can handle it, this only applies to people who are not men - we should try to protect others and open doors for them...oh shit, wait, no, that does not work either....just don't comment on anyone outside of saying you like the words they speak)
You noticed NO ONE here commented on his shoes? If he was a woman you would have. Why are people so people like when it comes to things like this? Don't they see it is harming us all to compliment others?
We need to educate folks on how to talk about others. Never compliment. Don't call someone 'hot' 'good looking' etc. What century are we in again that people take into account looks, clothes, etc???
Looking for my sarcasm tag, I think his bird pooped on it.

(31,893 posts)In fact, I haven't seen any of his poetry posted in any of the links that have been posted in this thread.
Meh.
Yes, he's cute - "pretty" is the word that comes to mind. However, since I'm at least 40 years too old for him, I guess I'm sort of immune to his charms.
To me, he looks like a guy who would have a hairy back. In one of the pictures I looked at (from a link) he looks like he has skinny legs. In pretty much ALL of the pictures that I've looked at, he looks like a guy who knows he looks hot and loves himself very much.
Maybe forty years ago I would have been happy to "hit that" for a short term bit of hedonistic self-gratification. But I'm pretty sure I would have then moved on to a man with an actual perceivable soul, no matter what his looks.
I don't see a soul in this guy, I only see a facade. I have nothing against superficial visual stimulation - it's enjoyable, it's fun, and it's momentarily exciting. It's just that by the time I looked at 20 or so different photos of this guy (yes, damn me, I kept opening up different pages of pictures), I was way over him.
Fun thread, and funny, too. Glad I'm not in my twenties anymore.

(24,544 posts)That's pretty much the definition of racist. It's fairly surprising to me that there are a few in this thread that have no problem with doing just that, or feel the need to bring up the man's Middle Eastern heritage for any reason.

PasadenaTrudy
(3,998 posts)gollygee
(22,336 posts)It means "dark skinned."
Xithras
(16,191 posts)Everyones buttons get pushed by different things. It's not racist to say "redheads turn me on, and black men don't". Ask any group of people to name three physical features that turn them on, and three that turn them off, and everyones answers will be different. Some people like curly hair, others don't. Some people like hairy men, others don't (my wife thinks that hairy men are repulsive). We all have different sexual turn-ons and turn-offs. A woman saying that she doesn't like dark skin is no different than a woman saying she doesn't like freckles or tatoos. It's simply a physical feature that can be a turn-on, or a turn-off, depending on their personal "wiring".
Racism implies a sense of superiority. Sexual attraction isn't about superiority, but about finding someone to make babies with. That kind of attraction happens at a subconsious level, is hardwired into your brain from childhood, and is very hard to change. It's not racist, but is a manifestation of a far more primal and animal mating instict.
Number23
(24,544 posts)color, you bet your ass that is racism. Racism does imply a sense of superiority, and to apply that MILLIONS (in some cases BILLIONS) of people of varying looks as well as intellectual and emotional capabilities "don't do it for you" simply because of their skin color/ethnicity is the HEIGHT (or depths?) of racist thinking.
And just because you've decided that this is based on something as arbitrary as "sexual attraction" makes it no less racist. Your likening "I don't like dark skin" to "I don't like tattoos" is just about the dumbest thing I've seen today. Lots of people base their decision to not date people of other colors and ethnicities because they "don't do it for them" which everyone knows means they find them unattractive in some manner of way either physically, culturally, intellectually whatever -- which is all code for one word, inferior. It doesn't fool anyone.
Ruling out individual people because you find them stupid, unlikeable, uninteresting etc. is human nature. Ruling out large swaths of the world's population as unattractive, unappealing or, to use your thinking, "undoable" solely because of the color of their skin, their religion, or their ethnicity is racist. Juvenile and stupid too.
Xithras
(16,191 posts)First, you're conflating dating with wanting to have sex with someone. I've met lots of people in my life that I'd sleep with, but that I'd never consider dating. There's a difference between physical attraction and actually seeking a mate. One is a physical response. The other requires actual thinking.
You're right though in that the tattoo scenario wasn't apt. A better one would be hair color. It's a physical trait, no different than skin color. I personally don't find blond hair attractive. Never have. Couldn't tell you why, but I don't find it pretty and have never dated with, slept with, or flirted with a blonde in my life. And I'll admit that it's a little weird, as my own mother is a strawberry blonde. Intellectually I have no problem with blondes. I love my mother (and my two blonde sisters), and I hold no stereotypes or biases against them (my mother is a highly intelligent attorney who would quickly make anyone telling blonde jokes regret it).
It's just unattractive to me. No more, no less. That's not racist, or superior, or bigoted. There are merely some physical features that I'm attracted to, and some that I'm not.
Skin color is just another physical feature when it comes to sexual attraction. Nothing more, nothing less. I happen to find dark skin sexy. Some don't. Whatever. Our fires are lit by different things. To freak out and call it "racist" is a wildly over the top response.
Number23

is 1/1 millionth the discrimination that people of color have had to face, then your theory will have some basis in fact or truth.
And to write off entire groups of people because of their appearance is the definition of bigoted and/or racist. I'm sorry that you can't see that. I don't care for blondes either, have never done a thing for me and Lord knows I have never entertained a blonde. But I am at least honest enough to admit that this is a bigoted position. A fairly minor bigoted position given the position that blondes are given in Western culture, but a bigoted one nonetheless.
ETA: And another thing, perhaps your mom is the reason you don't like blondes? Who knows? But your point bolsters my point that these types of preferences are not hard wired but are influenced by culture. No one comes out of the womb hating or loving blondes.
Number23
(24,544 posts)And that's just total BS.
The only thing "hard wired" into people's minds is sexual attraction to the same sex if you're homosexual or the opposite sex if you are hetero (and even that can be fluid for certain people). The attraction based on appearance (blonde hair, red, tall, thin, short) is something that usually comes from being "hard wired" by cultural influences. And that is definitely when and where racism comes into play.
