Thats the conclusion of a new report released today by Soluto, which crunched the data from its cloud-based PC monitoring and management software to come up with a list of the 10 most reliable portable PCs you can buy today.
The most reliable Windows PC you can buy today, according to Solutos report, doesnt come from one of the leading hardware OEMs. Instead, its built by Microsofts archrival Apple. (You'll have to use Apple's Boot Camp utility and buy your own Windows license to transform the Mac into a Windows PC.)
The report also provides a partial answer to the age-old question of whether you should use a vendors OEM image of Windows or wipe it and perform a clean installation.
Solutos database includes data gathered from millions of machines running Windows. For this study, the company chose a sample of data gathered in the first three months of 2013 from 150,000 portable PCs. They filtered the dataset so it includes only models available for purchase today, running Windows 7 or Windows 8.

You don't have partition your hard drive and you don't have boot in and out between platforms -- with enough RAM, you can even run Win and Mac simultaneously.
There is also a program called VMWare Fusion: It eliminates booting between platforms, but requires partitioning. I don't recommend it: I got virus warnings all over the place (I use both MacKeeper and Sophos). Click the pics for more info.

In the early 90's when I was shopping for my first computer, it was striking how much more a Mac was than a PC, and with approximately half the features. No color. Much smaller screen.
My main complaint, which perhaps only reflects my advanced age, is that whatever the OS, they're upgraded and fancy new things added far too quickly.

(21,115 posts)I buy a new Windows machine every 2.5 to 3 yrs. I invest about $600 aprox on them. Why would I want to spend triple on a Mac and then want new gigaws in a couple years? All you need to know is that every other iteration of Windows sucks...so I buy on the opposite years. For example the latest sucks...luckily I bought this machine last year. The next version of Windows will be awesome compared to 8. It's been going on for years....

(13,409 posts)For a family member, I picked up a $200 netbook, upgraded the RAM for $20 and upgraded to a rather speedy and large SSD for $90. So for a bit more than $300, I got a sleek and very portable laptop that will run anything she wants very quickly. In a few years she'll probably pick up another and spend another $300 or so on it and she'll still have spent less than half of what she would have if she had bought a MacBook. It's hardware that makes a computer quick and Apple charges entirely too much for theirs. I also game and Macs suck so incredibly badly for gaming. Forgetting that you can't get the latest GPUs for Macs of any kind, the top-of-the-line GPUs (for Macs, anyway) are ridiculously priced, typically two times or more as the PC equivalent which is the exact same card (without the Mac flashed BIOS).
Even if I had to buy premade machines, I'd still buy a PC. But the fact that you can build your own PC means you get exactly the computer you want. I've built my own Hackintoshes before, but I quickly turned it back to a Windows 7/Linux box as I had no desire for OSX. It ran perfectly well, though. When Apple switched to Intel architecture, it made cross compatibility much easier.
we can do it
(12,184 posts)Our macs don't have a compatibility issue. We have software that works with both platforms, there is no reason to buy a pc. My time is worth more than working with a shitty machine and microsoft crap.
EOTE
(13,409 posts)A PC can do anything you want with it, Macs have extremely limited software choices. My PCs never provide anything close to a headache, I simply put it together and it works. Not only that, but I can actually game well on my PC, even at ridiculous resolutions. They put those high resolution screens on Macs and then give them shitty GPUs that can't do the displays any justice. Try gaming at 2560x1600 on a Mac, what a joke. Unless you're playing a game that's a decade old or so, the Mac is going to sputter and give up. But, for a 3rd the price, I can make a PC which would run any modern game at that resolution quite well. Plus it could do any business or home theater functions I'd need of it too. If you've got money to waste and you want to waste it on a Mac, that's fine. But don't pretend that that over priced toy is as capable in any way as a PC that's less than a half the cost.
we can do it
(12,184 posts)I use my computer as a tool- I make more money when I get things done quickly. (I'm not hourly and like to sit around all day waiting for something to happen, or continuously buy new machines.- I fix tons of shit done on pcs and shit software like pubelicker, so spare me). If you want to eat shit and call it caviar go ahead, just don't try to push it on everyone else.
I'm not wasting anymore time on this nonsense.
EOTE
(13,409 posts)You can finally get a GTX 680 on a Mac, about 14 months after they were released for PCs. Of course, you'll spend $700 for that 680, about 50% more than it cost for PCs when they first came out. But at least you'll get that cool Mac sticker on it. PCs with compatibility issues? You do know that pretty much any modern peripheral works on PCs, right? You also know that almost all GPUs and peripherals need to have specially flashed BIOSes in order to function on Macs, right? It's the exact same damned hardware, but Apple knows that it's customers are extremely easy to fleece, so they make sure that you pay anywhere from 50% to 150% more for it. I'm also hoping that you know that after 18 years in IT, it's incredibly easy to shut down flimsy arguments made by the technologically clueless.
we can do it
(12,184 posts)I do know that most mac users have NO USE FOR YOU. I can set up my own networks and install my own software, print queues, servers and fix idiot pc crap software hack's files so they can actually print. I can also convert most shit that pc dumbasses think are print ready because they can see it on their monitor, its ready to go . Get over your damn self - its pathetic.
EOTE
(13,409 posts)Mac users have no use for me because there's really not a whole lot you can do with a Mac. They're rather expensive toys, which is ironic as you can't even game on one without spending at least a couple grand. Even as a business machine, you spend two to three times as much just for the shiny case you get. But you're an authority because you can print shit. You go on with your bad self, dude.

(273 posts)That's all they're saying.
There's so much spyware/freeware and crap installed on a PC/notebook by the major manufacturers. Apple doesn't install Windows, so when you install it, it starts fresh.
That said, I convinced the boss to let me have a retina 13" macbook pro because it has ridiculous resolution. 2560x1600 in a 13" display which is awesome for multi-tasking like I do.
I run OSX, then use a VMware VDI with all my corporate software. This way if the notebook is stolen or seized, no information was ever locally installed, and I lose nothing. You can't even tell who I work for.

It's been an evolution. Disappointed with the rapid obsolescence of computers I first set a limit of $300 for any replacement computer. Then my limit was $100, now it's maybe $10 but usually less than that, something I find on the curb with a "FREE" sign on it, or some other kind of hand-me-down.

(8,217 posts)The article pretty much states that:
"The secret of their success isnt all that surprising. Both companies deliver relatively clean installations of Windows, with close attention paid to drivers. Dell includes minimal amounts of third-party software in its PCs, a practice that adds to the reliability of its products."
Since the Apple products were wiped and installed with a clean version of Windows, it doesn't have to contend with crap-ware that many PCs get stuck with.
So, the best thing to do really is to figure out the key code for the OEM version of Windows and see if you can download from a reputable source the same version of Windows and use your license to place a clean install.
Although you have to make sure that you have the correct drivers, and you have a superior machine.
Kinda figured that part to begin with... Bloatware really needs to be taken out, but that is what makes PCs cheaper.
EOTE
(13,409 posts)So if I'm not putting together a system from scratch, I'll almost always start with a fresh OS install. As you said, bloatware can really burden a system. A fresh install is a no brainer.

Their installations are clean with no bloatware from the manufacturers.
Definitely a no brainer.

My AMD based laptop however can run Bioshock Infinite at near max settings, there is not a single game on the market that I can not run on my machine with graphics cranked up to at least high settings if not max while many laptops that cost three times as much struggle with games.
For me the only laptops that do what I want them to do at an affordable price are the AMD based laptops with the Radeon graphics chips, I simply don't know how Intel and Apple can justify charging so much for machines that can't even run most modern games.
