Conn. Mother of Two Risks Arrests to Deal with Cancer

At first glance, 42-year-old Tracey Gamer Fanning appears to be a typical mom in suburban Connecticut. She is not.

"I use medicinal marijuana," she said. "I am breaking the law right now because we don't have growers and distributors here in Connecticut." In 2006, Fanning, then the mother of a 4-year-old and 18-month-old, was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

Racked by seizures, debilitating headaches, and oppressive pain medication she spent much of her time in bed -- until she tried marijuana. "The first time I ever did it," Fanning said. "It gave me my life back."

Actually, I think she is a typical mom. She is a criminal because the laws of this land are repulsive and seek to harm people in order to create a criminal class out of people like her, or people who use marijuana without a doctor's prescription.

We put people in jail for doing the equivalent of drinking a beer.

The for-profit prison system is one of the biggest supporters of marijuana criminalization.

I don't use drugs never have. but if I were in her situation I would be a pot smoking fool.

It ashame we have to still live under the ignorance of Reagan.

Some needs to teach her about Aquaponic gardening and grow a private stash in a closet for her own personal use.

5. I have a friend that had brain cancer

At age 24. He's a brilliant drummer and was getting ready to go to France to play with Earth, Wind and Fire for one of the Black eyed Peas wedding. Then he got the news. Not going to France, going to hell instead. He survived the chemo (barely) but it really took a toll on him. With out pot, he can't eat, sleep, or function.

To deny a person something that helps them live is criminal in itself. Guns and alcohol are legal and kill MANY people. I don't know of any pot related deaths. I'm still here after 46 years of partaking so it must not be that dangerous~

And I would hope any DA that attempted to prosecute her would be pilloried by her community. That said, I don't think any parent of two kids under five should be prevented from possessing some marijuana, who needs it more?

7. When my cousin in Ct. was dying of cancer 5 years ago

I mailed marijuana to him from Colorado. Two 60 year olds breaking laws on every level for something that should be readily available to anyone with a flower pot and a grow light.

even with something like cancer, because they're afraid of the consequences.

When my step-mother went through chemo, the docs gave her marinol but she didn't like it. I've heard it's not as effective b/c it's just THC no CBD or other cannabinoids. She wouldn't consider trying cannabis instead. She was in such pain, vomiting her insides out...

yet she ended up with a prescription for morphine.

But why should someone have to use an inferior, tho legal b/c it's from a pharma co, medicine (marinol and morphine, for that matter) when it's possible to get effective relief from nausea, vomiting, wasting, pain, headaches, and all the rest that go along with cancer treatment?

I read recently that Polis, in the Congressional Research Report for the bill that is now in the House to remove cannabis from the controlled substances act and move to the the alcohol, firearms, tobacco bureaucracy, that the initial CSA is worded in such a way that it did not intend to stop states from deciding their own laws regarding these things.

I'm so glad to see others here on this thread who support better treatment for American citizens.

Obama and Holder need to do the right thing.

In the case of cannabis, it should be removed from the CSA. If some states want to keep it illegal, I would imagine they will have citizens who will remove the people from office who want to spend money putting cancer patients in jail.

This is an excellent group lobbying and educating about our insane laws against drugs. They have a web site, (don't have it offhand, but google it.) I heard a representative from this group speak recently, very impressive roster of people in it and on the board.
