Sarah Palin Calls for Invasion of Czech Republic
In an interview with Fox News, the former governor of Alaska said that although federal investigators have yet to complete their work, the time for action is now.
"We don't know everything about these suspects yet," Palin told Fox and Friends this morning, referring to Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who allegedly carried out the Boston Marathon attacks. "But we know they were Muslims from the Czech Republic.
"I betcha I speak for a lot of Americans when I say I want to go over there right now and start teaching those folks a lesson. And let's not stop at the Czech Republic, let's go after all Arab countries.

(44,573 posts)They don't know the difference between satire and false wit. If the goal was to make Sarah look too dumb to know the difference between Czechs and Chechans, it got lost in the translation.

(46,436 posts)Is Sarah in Arizona now, does anyone know? We haven't seen anything of her lately and her voice was noticeably absent during the recent legislative debate to kill her one good piece of legislation passed during her short time as governor, the ACES oil tax. With her gone and a gerrymandered Republican supermajority in our legislature, Gov. Parnell just repealed that bill and replaced it with a monstrosity which will essentially give ConocoPhillips, BP and EXXON a $2 billion a year tax break with absolutely no guarantees of increased investment in the state. This is extremely significant for Alaska which relies on oil revenues for about 80% or more of its operating budget. Cutting the oil revenues is Parnell's way of forcing austerity while enriching his friends at the same time. He was a CP lobbyist after all before becoming governor and several members of the legislature are CP executives who stand to benefit financially from this deal.
People here are livid and are circulating a referendum petition to repeal the bill.
But I digress...

War, Ambrose Bierce said, is Gods way of teaching Americans geography. But despite all the lessons learned during the long-running war on terror, Americans could probably use a little more instruction. The Czech embassy issued a statement following the attacks to clarify that the two Boston bombing suspects actually traced their roots to Chechnya, not the Czech Republic, after waves of anti-Czech rhetoric swamped social media.
Expletive-filled postings on Twitter and Facebook were common, along with milder comments such as So the Boston bombers were 19-year-old Russians of Czech descent Why lord? and The guys that bombed Boston were Czech. What is it 1980?
So much vitriolic anti-Czech sentiment was aired online that one Tumblr user compiled a shame list of erroneous hateful comments. And it was not only social-media users getting confused; a former CIA agent commenting on the manhunt for CNN also got the two territories mixed up live on air.
Petr Gandalovic, the Czech Republics ambassador to the U.S., was naturally keen to clear up the confusion. As more information on the origin of the alleged perpetrators is coming to light, I am concerned to note in the social media a most unfortunate misunderstanding in this respect, he said in a statement. The Czech Republic and Chechnya are two very different entities the Czech Republic is a Central European country; Chechnya is a part of the Russian Federation.

(35,698 posts)Fact: Some Americans are confusing the Czech Republic and Chechnya.
Fact: When it comes to confusion, there are few public figures who can match Sarah Palin.
So the satire works.

And taking location out of the equation. tarting a war with Russia is the last thing we want because the country is only recognized as part of Russia and to declare war on Russia is all it is. We are in the position now to get help with Russia . She was to start a war. I'd be declaring her a terrorist.

(115,659 posts)Unfortunately this doesn't stop people from assuming their "articles" to be true and either posting them as such or believing them and working themselves into a lather of outrage, instead of (a) paying attention to the disclaimer on the site, or (b) reading with a critical mind able to detect satire. Especially lame satire.
