Good news for a change

As we reported on Saturday, millions of dollars have already been raised directly for specific bystanders who lost limbs in the Boston Marathon bombing. Some of the victims had no health insurance and their friends set up fundraising web pages to help pay the bills.

Businesses now are showing their spirit for Boston through generous contributions to the One Fund Boston. According to ABC News, the fund, which is collecting donations that will be divided between victims and their families, has already topped $10 million.

New Balance Athletic Shoe Inc. announced Monday a $1 million donation to the fund established by Mayor Thomas Menino and Governor Deval Patrick to streamline the process of supporting those directly impacted by the attack.

“I am humbled by the outpouring of support by the business community and individuals who are united in their desire to help; The One Fund Boston will act as a central fund to receive much needed financial support,” Governor Patrick said. “At moments like this, we are one state, one city, and one people.”

Boston's Mayor Menino said support from the business community was immediate. “Within an hour, I had calls from business leaders and local philanthropists who, like me, were heartbroken… And they want to do everything they can to help these people physically and psychologically in the future.”

Major League Baseball, its players and Boston Red Sox fans have contributed $646,500, including $46,500 raised at Fenway Park over the weekend.

The cornerstone donation to The One Fund Boston is a $1 million commitment from John Hancock, a corporations which has been headquartered in Boston for more than 150 years.

I was concerned how some of those families were going to be able to handle all those medical bills, not just for now but in the future as well. With all the ugliness in the world, it's wonderful to see the beauty .
