"I'm an incidental hero," Henneberry said.

from Watertown Patch:

'There's a Body in the Boat': Interview with Boat Owner Who Found Marathon Bombing Suspect

Dave Henneberry waves off talk of him being a hero.

"I'm an incidental hero," Henneberry said. "I wasn't out on the prowl, I was out to see my boat and I stumbled across this thing."

How does he feel about the groundswell effort to buy him a new boat to replace the bullet-riddled one?

"It makes me feel wonderful ... but it's only a boat. There are people who have lost lives and limbs. I'd rather the money goes to the One Fund Boston."

After all, he said, "I've got a canoe in the garage."

that let him mention the lack of seeing blood. It has been cut out of all other interviews.

All media said he saw blood, and by golly, they are sticking to their story (not his.)

Worst coverage of everything about the Boston story that I have ever seen and no retractions when they are proven wrong.

I think the media is overusing the term "hero."

. . . all the grousing about whether he's a 'hero' or not will reduce this man to a level where I think these folks prefer him; beneath them.

Why even quibble with it? He didn't invent the notion. He rejects it.

I know that I'm personally grateful that he discovered the 'body' and made the call - allowing the suspect to be arrested before he caused anyone else any more harm. I know some folks would deny him even that consideration.

What a planet! We humans really know how to stink up the joint.

We should all drive to his place right now and toilet paper his house! Who the hell does he think he is, having the media identify him as a hero?

We're so much better than him! And you know how I know that we're better? Because the first thing we'll say is "I'm not saying I'm better than him, but..."

Not saying that he is or is not a hero, but it does help to know that often, heroic deeds and actions are really rather small affairs and without dramatic consequence. More often than not, the heroism is unknown to all involved, including the hero him/herself.

"We need heroes because they draw us on to become better versions of ourselves." (Unknown)
