The energies of the collisions that happen in the LHC happen all the time when ultra high energy cosmic rays hit the earth's atmosphere. We aren't doing anything that isn't in essence duplicated many times each day by nature. We're just doing it in circumstances under our control, and where we happen to be watching very closely.

For those here who don't get it, see post #8 for a simple explanation.

No wonder this country has to deal with so many people who think the universe is 6000 years old and/or think the planet is not warming.

This kind of ignorance pisses me off a bit.

Just as a biologist might not laugh at a cartoon promulgating creationism.

The ignorant thinking in this cartoon was prevalent during the lead up to the LHC's start up and it was all rubbish. The LHC scientists had to spend an inordinate amount of time debunking the rubbish.

Sorry for bringing you all down.

Right now, as fast as the equipment could be deployed, we could remove every last pathogen from food. We could literally put steak (and most other perishables) on the shelves, without refrigeration, for months. Use raw eggs with impunity.

This sort of (almost prideful) pig ignorant fear is why we don't routinely use gamma irradiation to sterilise ALL of our food.

Just a bit uncomfortable with playing on the many conspiracy theories common before the LHC startup. We have enough of them already. We need more critical thinking.

All the people claiming the LHC will blow up the universe will be back for the next collider. And then there were those guys rubbing sticks together, didn't know WHAT they were about to do...

As bad as the people who freak out out this are, I really can't stand when people cite quantum mechanics as supporting their idea of ESP or new age theories - "We don't understand it at all, therefore wizards."

CARTOONS! SCIENCE! JOKES! HULK MAD HULK SMASH!

PZ Myers, a biologist and professor, has no trouble laughing heartily at creationist thought... before bloodily demolishing it into a steaming pile of goo. And he does it without being a humorless bore. Phil Plait, an astronomer, has no trouble likewise handling things that are clearly wrong, though he dismantles them with a little less aggression in his words. And he too does it without being a humorless bore.
