General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI posted an OP late last night/early this morning that turned out to be a HUGE mistake....
After reading a few responses, I told one poster that I would delete the post and apologize if I found more credible evidence that it was a case of mistaken identity. During the time it took me to write that post, a few others had replied, and I started looking into their claims.
Let me preface this just to tell you all that I suffer from insomnia (among other ailments), and had been up for nearly 40 hours. While researching some of the info others posted, I came to the conclusion that I had made a mistake and was indeed wrong. I fully intended on deleting the story and admitting I was wrong. I was in the middle of a reply stating as much, but regretfully fell asleep... probably due to 30mg's of oxycodone and a 2mg xanax bar kicking in.
I woke up about an hour or so ago, still sitting at the computer with the "reply" window open, so I finished the reply, hit "post my reply", and got a message that the post had been locked.
I have never been afraid to admit if/when I was wrong on here, and that will never change. I was wrong, made a case of mistaken identity and, though I had been searching for more info since I discovered this last Friday, I should have done even more research before posting. I thank everyone else who provided links and more info to show me my mistake.
My sincere apologies to all... and please note that this will be the only comment I make on this subject and this post.
Peace,
Ghost

(34,845 posts)Cool that you're able to adjust your opinion due to changing info. Not many can do that.

(27,573 posts)But I admit sometimes I do PUI. Cultivate a forgiving nature if you can, for soon enough it will be your turn to be forgiven. It's not the end of the world. Life goes on.
I must say it is refreshing to see you so willing to admit you were wrong. So many people seem incapable of doing such a thing.

(23,864 posts)I think that whenever someone takes the time to publicly apologize for this or that, that happened on DU, it's worth acknowledging that apology and giving the sincerity of it the benefit of the doubt.
Holding one's self accountable is a good sign of a beneficial member of any discussion community.
BTW, I have absolutely no idea what your old thread was about.

(22,109 posts)If so, how about sending a petition like this directly to the host who locked it asking them to unlock it so you could correct the OP?
It's definitely worth a try....

I had to go dig it up and I love the responses.
I think it should be unlocked, and you given a chance to edit.

(27,573 posts)OK, I know I should say escape. But I know you are resigned to your fate in this respect, and I like to have some fun from time to time.

(4,185 posts)But I think you make some valid points.
Kicking people out will never work. Every constituency has a bizarro 10% working against it.
I don't own any guns. I think I might want to one day for different reasons. And while I'm for the FOIA it really freaked me out when the Westchester, NY newspaper created a searchable google-maps-style page for anyone to view. I know one argument is to make it like a sex offender style database.
I'm not comfortable equating gun owners to sex offenders. And no one is trying to steal anything from the sex offenders houses.
There were stories that homes were burglarized after that, but who knows the validity.
I'm sure they did get the death threats from the nuts evidenced by their hiring armed security outside the paper.
The point is guns are not going away number one, There are just too many of them. Number two criminals will not aquire them legally. Three, if we can ban machine guns I think it's plausible to ban 100 round drum magazines and probably a lot more.
But the argument is not, "because you don't need (insert item here) to go hunting." The spirit of the second ammendment is not outdoorsmanship. I'm not even sure I can articulate it but in a way I equate it to people's desire to home school their kids or become farmers. In another way I think it makes people feel more connected to their country. Much like 1st amendment practioners do.
Anyway, I really liked the spirit of the post but I think most would agree it was a bit overly spirited. And like the other posters I think you did the right thing recinding it because your message got lost.
