North Carolina Senate blocks testing themselves when passing welfare drug testing bill

Republicans in the North Carolina state Senate on Monday pushed through bill that would strip public benefits like food stamps and job training for people who fail a drug test.

In 35-15 vote largely along party lines, senators passed SB 594. A single Democrat voted for the bill, and no Republicans voted against it.

The bill requires those applying for benefits to pay for their own drug tests. Applicants who test negative would be eligible to have the costs of their tests reimbursed. The policy could cost the state more than $2.1 million.

At the same time, senators rejected an amendment offered by Democratic state Sen. Gladys Robinson that would have drug tested lawmakers, the governor and cabinet secretaries.

“We receive state funds, we represent the law, we institute policy,” Robinson told senators on Monday night. “So, it should not be above any of us to submit to drug screening.”

negative results would BE ELIGIBLE for reimbursement. Why the fuck isn't that automatic, at least? And yes, that's a rhetorical question. Hey North Carolina! Get ready for an increase in crime! That's what you're going to get when you take away benefits and job training! Enjoy!

they found the average of 2% had some kind of drug in their system. Just like the rest of the citizenry. Here, prickscott supported the testing because his wife got her hands on Solantic, the company he owned but divested himself of, that did the testing.

Nope, no conflict of interest there at all.

Just follow the money as to who does the testing.

guess that's one way to get them off the rolls. Now a child whose mom takes a puff now and then, maybe to ease her pain, can starve to death. Meanwhile the cocktails flow for the lawmakers. Really sickening

for a REVOLUTION. I mean America.
WE can be non-violent. WE know that "they" won't be, at first anyway. IMO, as WE increase the pressure and it spreads by word of mouth...all of the police are not militarized yet. Not ALL of the military would shoot their brothers and sisters.
If we could sustain a non-violent (on our part) revolution. We could expect many (suffering like us) converts to the cause. Many already are. They are mostly in the closet, they have no choice, yet.
I never wanted this for OUR country but we have no viable options.
I have resigned myself to the knowledge that another FDR will not be elected. Citizens United has made that impossible, so has our low intelligence citizenry. It is a fantasy if we believe our dire situation will change unless WE change it.

The citizens of the world have recognized this. People in other countries have been dying for justice. I volunteer. Put us short timers on the front lines. We can be cannon fodder like our poor kids have been for the last 12+ years. We don't need suicide vests. The more martyrs "they" create, the better for us.
