This could move us forward

If you have not seen this before it is worth the time.

Shift Change examines the movement toward democratic, worker-owned businesses from the Mondragón Cooperative Corporation [MCC] in the Basque region of Spain to the recent creation of the Evergreen Cooperatives in Cleveland, Ohio.

Produced by Melissa Young and Mark Dworkin, this film explores a different kind of business model, putting communities and human lives above bottom line profits. You can hear a few of the stories from these worker/owners and learn about the success of the model in the short clip below. You can also read a bit each of the coops featured in the video by clicking here.

Dr. Richard Wolff is a proponent of that model as a viable means to get around, and away from, the prevalent, predatory corporate tyranny.

That also means empowering people, protecting and healing what's left of the planet, and forestalling and potentially eliminating the dominant corporate paradigm that can lead to a grim, Fascist future with little chance of escape.

We really have little choice at this stage other than to explore and promote alternatives that are tangible enactments of our REAL values and note those with dark undertones implied by many politicians and pundits.

I really want to see this one and hope everyone does.

When I think of a worker's owned business I think of People's Food in Ocean Beach California

Ocean Beach People's Organic Food Market is a member-owned vegetarian consumer co-op that has been serving the community since 1972. Originally a worker's collective, the cooperative has grown to include 6,000 feet of retail space and more than 13,500 member/owners. The Co-op offers an extensive selection of organic produce, grocery, dairy, and bulk foods and herbs, as well as vitamins and homeopathics, cruelty-free bodycare, and aromatherapy products. Enjoy a full service sit-down deli featuring a delicious selection of home-style vegetarian and vegan entrees, salads, sandwiches, freshly prepared baked goods, desserts, and more! At People's, San Diego's only customer-owned grocery store, we specialize in products that are organic, wholesome, minimally processed, vegetarian and environmentally safe.

I shopped there when it first started up in the early '70s and now it's in a new sustainable building since 2002 they built on the property!

The years 2001 and 2002 found us remodeling yet again. This time, however, the Co-op moved into a whole new building. We are staying on the same site that we have occupied since 1973, but we have designed and constructed a new sustainable building to meet our growing needs and serve as a model of conscious construction. The new building was completed in the summer 2002 and O.B. People's, our very own community-owned Co-op, has begun a new chapter for a new millennium

Sounds like a little someone I know. In fact she was the one that sent me the information.

The Evergreen Cooperatives of Cleveland, Ohio are pioneering innovative models of job creation, wealth building, and sustainability. Evergreen’s employee-owned, for-profit companies are based locally and hire locally. They create meaningful green jobs and keep precious financial resources within the Greater University Circle neighborhoods. Worker-owners at Evergreen earn a living wage and build equity in the firms as owners of the business.
