Just because he lost his election, doesn't mean that Allen West is controlling his mouth.
His wife is on the board of Florida Atlantic University. That university recently made a deal to name its stadium after GEO Group, Inc, a company which runs private prisons. The students successfully protested, and the deal was withdrawn.
The board is also making other decisions about the school which the students find wrong, and they are still protesting.
Allen West Incites Threats Against University Students
Former Congressman Allen West has issued a "warning" to Florida Atlantic University students, writing on his Facebook page that if they continue their meetings and protests of his wife's board of trustees office, "you will face me, the side of me that you do not want to see."
West's wife, Angela Graham-West, was appointed to the FAU board by Gov. Rick Scott's office in May 2011. Since that time the board has faced a number of student protests and media storms, notably the recent dispute over whether their university stadium should grant naming rights to GEO Group, one of the largest operators of for-profit prisons and the focus of several lawsuits and federal investigations.
This is what West wrote on his Facebook page:
I am warning you, end your harassment of my wife Angela. ... This is not a threat, it is a promise that if Angela calls and tells me of one more incident, you will face me, the side of me that you do not want to see. ... How dare you animals attack my wife and her professional reputation. This is your one and only advisory notice.
Read that again, it is a threat against the students.
Even more scary are some of the responses at his Facebook page.
Rod Jerkins: "Col. West, I for one will stand with you."
Jeremy Bliller: "Tell me where to go and who."
Sam Kaufman: "Congressman: I'm a combat vet with a lot of time on my hands. You need to put a team together, you let me know!"
Ron Hubers: "I have your 'six' if you need it, Sir!"
Rodney Fowler: "I think a Glock 9MM should get the job done."
Eddie Spraggs: "Lock and LOAD Colonel!!"
Here is more background on the GEO protests.
Florida Atlantic University Students Protest GEO Group Name Attached To Stadium
The public university announced last week that it had struck a deal to name its football stadium after GEO Group, Inc., one of the largest operators of for-profit prisons in the U.S. and a major donor to the Florida Republican Party. In exchange, FAU will receive $6 million from the company over 12 years.
..."The board of trustees should have done due diligence on GEO before they signed that agreement," Gonzalo Vizcardo, a student protest leader, told the Palm Beach Post. "What (Saunders) said about GEO being 'a wonderful company' was outrageous."
One of the GEO Group's facilities, an immigration detention center known as the Broward Transitional Center in Pompano Beach, Fla., has been the subject of scrutiny for alleged human rights abuses.
At the Walnut Grove Youth Correctional Facility, another GEO Group property in Mississippi, a report issued by the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice found that the institution was "deliberately indifferent to staff sexual misconduct and inappropriate behavior with youth. The sexual misconduct we found was among the worst that we have seen in any facility anywhere in the nation."

(7,759 posts)There have been visits to our social service group by college students who are organizing with a national activist movement addressing the ills of a growing correctional-industrial-complex and the privatization of prisons all around the country. This privatization can only thrive when prisons are full and new one built...hence the proliferation of 3-strike laws, imprisonment for non-violent victimless crimes (smoking reefer, carry small amounts of weed, etc., and in some cases failure to pay traffic fines). The movement is headlined some times as The Criminal Justice System:Mass Incareration, the New Jim Crow" . The students who presented to our group were serious, social activists who are trying to call attention to the disparity in arrests, charging, and imprisonment of blacks and Latinos vs whites for the same or even less severe actions. Some parents are even being imprisoned for truancy of their children...one case where the child stayed home to care for a grandmother while the single mom worked. Some of the stories were heart wrenching. So mention this in this tread for DUers who might want to learn more about what may be motivating the students protest this move by this board.
The prison-industrial-complex (P-I-C) is a growing problem for our nation and a new corporate profit center for some.

(6,234 posts)West just gave these students the encouragement they needed to continue, and once this story gets around you can expect more to join in. I suspect that many of the pro-West posts are trolls urging him on, and some might well be the police offering him some delicious bait. In any case, it's always nice to see someone I detest destroying themselves.

Remember when you go after the next group they won't be tied up like those prisoners were. You are part of the problem, how much money was your wife getting back as kickbacks? Just go away, and take your tough guy friends with you.

(12,482 posts)this is a car crash at one of the many right wing intersections of interest. this one has freakish ideology, graft/privatization, brutality/sexual humiliation, nepotism and violent craziness all wrapped up in perfect example of what is wrong with this country and republicans in particular .
freakish ideology: anything to do with Allen West
graft/privatization: one of the largest operators of for-profit prisons in the U.S. and a major donor to the Florida Republican Party.
brutality/sexual humiliation: "deliberately indifferent to staff sexual misconduct and inappropriate behavior with youth. The sexual misconduct we found was among the worst that we have seen in any facility anywhere in the nation."
nepotism: West's wife, Angela Graham-West, was appointed to the FAU board by Gov. Rick Scott's office in May 2011
violent craziness: "the side of me that you do not want to see"

(88,117 posts)Allen West -- as a politician, professional and as an adult -- should know better. No one of his stature should be involved in threatening anyone, let alone college students.
But, as always, West is full of surprises and himself. And he is also now on the wrong-end of a complaint filed by a Florida Atlantic University student claiming that West used Facebook to threaten any student daring enough to criticize, or even contact, his wife, Angela Graham-West, over the flap involving FAU, the GEO Group and the naming rights of the universitys stadium.
....But West, according to media reports, decided to dive into the fray and re-open the wounds after his wife (an FAU board trustee) became the target of students who apparently tried to wage civil discourse by contacting her at Board of Trustee meetings and sending letters to her workplace. West deemed this harassment and used social media to declare this is not a threat but that if the students continued on their path they would face me, the side of me you do not want to see. His final words: This is your one and only advisory notice.
Notice to college kids: You are students. You are learning. You are spreading your wings. And by using veiled language and threats, West taught you a nasty but important lesson: Not all adults are grown up enough to engage in a thoughtful, meaningful exchange of ideas. And bullying doesnt stop after school.

(88,117 posts)While she remains comfortable outside of the spotlight, Graham-West isnt shy about expressing her opinions. In a February blog post entitled, File This Under Conservatives Uninvited, she bemoans Fordham University for barring conservative Ann Coulter from speaking at the school while extending a warm greeting to Peter Singer, a well-known animal rights activist she says had promoted the extinction of the human race to benefit the planet.
She didnt mince any words either during the 2012 congressional campaign in which West was defeated by political newcomer Democrat Patrick Murphy. Commenting on her husbands Allen West Republic blog, she took an NAACP spokesman to task for failing to criticize a Murphy campaign ad she said depicted her husband in a stereotypical light.
An academic embarrassment
The NAACP official denied seeing anything wrong with the spot, which only prompted Graham-West to quote Booker T. Washington in describing how irrelevant the civil rights organization had become.
There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs and the hardships of the Negro race before the public, she wrote, quoting the famed black educator who founded Tuskegee Institute. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays.
Wow to that last paragraph.
