Reports: Police Eye Bombing Suspect’s Possible Role In 2011 Triple-Murder

Police in Waltham, Mass. have begun to look at the role deceased Boston Marathon bombings suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev may have played in a brutal 2011 triple-murder, according to reports.

The Boston Globe and ABC 5 have both reported that Waltham police are stepping up their efforts to crack the still-open homicide and exploring a possible connection to Tsarnaev, the 26-year-old bombing suspect who was killed Thursday night during a tense shootout with authorities.

"We are looking at a possible connection with the suspect in the marathon atrocity and this active and open homicide in Waltham,'' Stephanie Guyotte, a spokeswoman for the Middlesex County District Attorney, told ABC 5.

Brendan Mess, 25, Erik Weissman, 25, and Raphael Teken, 37, were killed on Sept. 12, 2011 in Mess's apartment in Waltham. According to the Globe, Tsarnaev was neighbors with at least one member of Mess's family in East Cambridge, Mass. The three victims had their sloats slit and were reportedly left covered with marijuana.

On her twitter feed (@lrozen), the journalist Laura Rozen has been pointing to very good reasons for looking at Tsarnaev in relation to these murders. That's not to claim that he was definitely responsible, just that he should be investigated as a suspect. The murders were both brutal and highly unusual (certainly not standard for, say, a drug dispute or a burglary gone wrong). Tsarnaev was a friend of one of the victims and probably acquainted with the other two. And we know now that Tsarnaev was capable of multiple murder as of April 2013. The murders took place a year and a half ago, September 2011. 9/11/11, in fact.

but would never post it on DU because people jump your shit if you merely pose a question might be seen as being in mild conflict with the "official" reports. I've already gotten jumped on for thinking some things were strange, and I see others get viciously slapped down for the same reason. I love DU, but there is a lot of rudeness towards people who I feel have legitimate questions, because it's considered, "wild speculation" and "crazy".

Because that thread was started in Latest Breaking News rather than in General Discussion, the lock was understandable.

Did you read how Tamerlan got ejected from a mosque for going ballistic when the iman held up MLK as someone worthy to emulate?

says that he has admitted to this being driven by his Islamic beliefs. And maybe that is true. But it seems really odd that none of his friends commented on the fact that he was deeply into the Islam thing. The Islamophobes seem to be hanging their story on a report that the carjack victim said they spared his life because he wasn't an American.

Well, that's something. But still it makes no sense. How did any of this advance any cause?

This is a political football.

These guys were just nuts. I really don't think there was much more to it. They may use the language of jihad because that at least makes a little bit of sense on some level.

That sounds very strange. Why would a drug dealer do something like that and lose good money not selling it?
