So much for solidarity.
Before long the criticism of Bostonians as cowering wimps emerged. Unflattering comparisons of Massachusetts residents and red staters with guns are common in the wingnut internet world and in right wing periodicals. You know: Texans would never have allowed themselves to be penned in like sheep and run roughshod over by the fascist police, FBI and ATF. They would have gone a-terrorist-huntin' with their prized guns.
The "Boston Strong" meme is being mocked: Boston Strong = Arbeit Macht Frei!". Big Papi is under fire for saying "This our fucking city" when there were (gasp) children present.
The pious prayers for those wounded swiftly evolved into nasty criticism of Boston and liberals for enabling "evil Muslims" and others, for being tolerant and for embracing multiculturalism.
Nope. Didn't take long at all.

(20,135 posts)Owning firearms should be a privilege, defined and regulated by federal law, not enshrined in the Constitution just as many other protections are. Driving is a good example. Driving is probably more essential for more people than owning a gun is, yet it is not found among the "Bill of Rights". Driving is regulated by state laws; federal law regulates car manufacturing standards among other things. Drivers are licensed and must pass tests to maintain their license, because cars - just as guns - can be very dangerous machines when used improperly. This setup works for driving; it should work for firearm ownership.
Environmental regulations, medical privacy laws, workplace safety laws: these are examples of protections we enjoy that are not in the Constitution but nonetheless are the law of the land. They can be strengthened or weakened, and adjusted, as needed.

I've noticed that everyone who has a problem with the police's actions has one thing in common: None of them fucking live in Watertown--or in Boston, for that matter. The BPD should be commended--they showed us what a well-trained, well-funded police force can do. There were no civilian casualties--hell, the only guy that died was one of the suspects.
There's a small core that has some inaccurate visions in their heads.
