http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/04/boston-teamsters-to-form-human-shield.htmlTeamsters from Local 25 in Boston will protect the family of bombing victim Krystle Campbell during her funeral tomorrow morning. Members of the Westboro Baptist Church are expected to protest.
Local 25 was contacted by some concerned citizens of Medford asking for help to keep members of the Westboro Baptist Church from protesting the funeral of Krystle Campbell, scheduled for tomorrow morning at 10 AM in Medford.
Local 25 President Sean OBrien asked all off-duty Teamsters to participate:
Teamsters Local 25 will be out in full force tomorrow morning at St. Josephs Church in Medford to form a human shield and block the Westboro Baptist Church from protesting the funeral of Krystle Campbell. The Campbell family and friends have already endured immeasurable amounts of heartache and tragedy this week, and deserve a peaceful funeral with time to grieve privately.
Westboro Baptist Church should understand that we will go to great lengths to make sure they don't protest any funerals of the victims of the past weeks tragedies, and that those we lost receive a proper burial.
Teamsters Local 25 represents 11,000 hardworking men and women from the Boston area.

(295,929 posts)The unions said Tuesday they hoped the reward would help authorities find who was behind the bombs that killed three people, including an 8-year-old boy, and injured more than 170 others.
The Boston Police Patrolmens Association, the Professional Firefighters of Massachusetts, Boston Firefighters Local 718, Boston Police Superior Officers Federation and the Boston Police Detectives Benevolent Society are pooling their resources to fund the reward.

(27,985 posts)But the vast majority stands against that darkness and, like white blood cells attacking a virus, they dilute and weaken and eventually wash away the evil doers and, more importantly, the damage they wreak. This is beyond religion or creed or nation. We would not be here if humanity were inherently evil. We'd have eaten ourselves alive long ago.
So when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think, "The good outnumber you, and we always will.""

(27,985 posts)Funding
WBC's travel expenses exceed $200,000 annually. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, Westboro is funded entirely by its congregation and accepts no outside donations. The church has received money from lawsuits and legal fees. For example, they sued the city of Topeka several times in the 1990s. WBC received $16,500, and is pursuing another $100,000, in legal fees for a case won in court. The WBC is considered a nonprofit organization by the federal government, and is therefore exempt from paying taxes.

(53,661 posts)...Americans are often confronted with a terrible dilemma. We pay huge price for our freedom and sometimes the cost seems almost impossible to bear. Take, for example, the foul mouthed haters of the Westboro Baptist Church, many of whom have high profile jobs with the state of Kansas, complete with extensive protection against termination. They are able to rant and rave on their own time and scream God Hates Fags and Jews Killed Jesus, and the state of Kansas simply can not fire them for their offensive conduct. They can even get away with picketing the funeral of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut and return to work with a self-satisfied smirk on their faces.
Fred Phelps is the founder of the nest of vipers known as the Westboro Baptist Church, and three of his brood work for the state of Kansas. Daughter Margie Phelps is director of re-entry for the Kansas Department of Corrections, and her job is protected by the Civil Service Act. Fred Phelps Jr., the oldest child, is a staff lawyer with the Kansas Department of Corrections. The youngest child, Abigail Phelps, works for the Topeka Juvenile Correctional Facility, part of the Juvenile Justice Authority.
People across the nation are stunned and outraged that these three specimens of humanity, all members of a group that is known as Americas most hated family, actually are in a position of authority over people who are in the criminal justice system, especially juveniles...
By now you may be asking, How the hell do this litigious hate mongers get away with this and even manage to remained employed by the state of Kansas? The answer is simple and it will probably shock you. The Phelps family and the Westboro Baptist Church are protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution. Like everyone else in America, they have freedom of speech...

(3,893 posts)They don't give a shit about their own message or wher they picket. Their goal is to exercise their constitutional rights to be assholes and to make money suing people and cities that get in their way. As soon as they see that they aren't going to get a rise out of people, they split.
The only way to get them to stop is to make it unprofitable for them to continue. And to do that, you have to simply refuse to engage with them. The human shields serve this purpose -- let the family grieve, stop the antagonism.
It is only a matter of time before they run out of money. In the meantime, they make a nice focal point for people to get together for the purpose of being nice.
Imagine when future human shields one day will be able to turn around and face the event they no longer need to protect.

Church Westboro Baptist Church
Fred Waldron Phelps, Sr. (born November 13, 1929) is an American pastor heading the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC), an independent Baptist church based in Topeka, Kansas. Phelps is a disbarred lawyer, founder of the Phelps Chartered law firm, and a former civil rights activist
Disbarment
A formal complaint was filed against Phelps on November 8, 1977, by the Kansas State Board of Law Examiners for his conduct during a lawsuit against a court reporter named Carolene Brady. Brady had failed to have a court transcript ready for Phelps on the day he asked for it; though it did not affect the outcome of the case for which Phelps had requested the transcript, Phelps still requested $22,000 in damages from her.[17][18] In the ensuing trial, Phelps called Brady to the stand, declared her a hostile witness, and then cross-examined her for nearly a week, during which he accused her of being a "slut", tried to introduce testimony from former boyfriends whom Phelps wanted to subpoena, and accused her of a variety of perverse sexual acts, ultimately reducing her to tears on the stand.[17][18] Phelps lost the case; according to the Kansas Supreme Court:

Freedom of speech is sacred, but harassing grieving families at funerals with such ugliness over and over again year after year has to be breaking some law.

(27,985 posts)MEDFORD - Some 200 members of Teamsters Local 25 members began gathering at St. Josephs Church before 8 a.m. today, promising to block protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church if they follow through on a threat to picket the funeral of Krystle M. Campbell, who died in the Boston Marathon bombings.
Campbells funeral Mass is set for 11 a.m., a week after the bombings.
Sean OBrien, president and principal officer of Teamsters local, said the community reached out to the Teamsters yesterday because they know how influential we are.
Its the right thing to do, OBrien said of the decision to protect the funeral. The family deserves a peaceful grieving process thats free from any coward-led group.
OBrien said the Teamsters mobilized their members and other unions through Twitter and Facebook yesterday. He added that about 350 Teamsters are expected this morning, and we can get 1,000 if we need them.

(19,288 posts)Love the idea of teamsters in general because the action word is "team". Teams are a good thing. And belonging to a team, and working together as a unit, is a strength in America. Why are unions so bastardized? It must be because unions are one of the few ways to bargain with the man. To fight for labor rights.
It would be a good Democratic principle to support Unions and Teamsters because they support society in a healthy way. I thank them and they have my support.
