The Community of Christ Church should recognize same-sex marriage where legal in the U.S., offer commitment services for same-sex couples where marriage is not legal and open the door to priesthood regardless of sexual orientation, a national conference recommends.

Some 1,500 delegates from across the U.S. met in Independence following the church's World Conference last week. On Sunday, they released their recommendations for policy changes for the church in the U.S. The church's top leadership would have to approve the changes before the policy revisions would be implemented.

The church has spent the last three years studying the issues surrounding same-sex/gender marriage or commitment services and ordination regardless of sexual orientation. From the local level, those discussions worked up to the Community of Christ USA National Conference, which began Friday. Any policy recommendations required 67 percent approveal by the delegates.

The policy changes would apply only to the U.S. churches. Community of Christ has nearly 250,000 members in about 50 nations. Current policy will still apply in other nations.
