Since July 2008, Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital in Las Vegas has transported more than 1,500 patients to other cities via Greyhound bus, sending at least one person to every state in the continental United States, according to a Bee review of bus receipts kept by Nevada's mental health division.

(7,515 posts)There is no explaining it, no understanding it...there are simply people who value only their own lives and not any others. Sadly, those who are that selfish are the least desirable components of a civilized society and we seem to have an overabundance of them.

(7,515 posts)So many of our homeless, during the 1980s, were those who had been kicked out of state mental hospitals. I am beginning to worry that our day of reckoning may be approaching, faster than we think.

Nevada is getting tough love on this because of a high profile case back in Feb.
My bet is that many states which don't want to support medicaid are doing this.

(12,712 posts)You asked what's wrong with this country.
Well, far too much in almost every aspect of it. That's factual by way of comparisons and charts that shows we are are already way down the tubes, (for most of us in America #2) and it seems that a functional and persuasive facade has been making that seem less so than it is.
You can go on and on and show facts and data that indicate we are in a dizzying, downward spiral that is holding up well, like a house of cards, so it is not that noticeable, superficially.
From education to poverty to incarceration rates to homelessness to health care to ... you name it ... America is, (for the rapidly expanding underclass) going Third-world with a nice, chocolate wrapper of sweet denial on it.
The rest of the Middle-class won't really get this clearly until they only see two directions to go from where they are and one of those directions is highly unlikely, the other, well, its really grim out there and there is NO safety net for adults without children, (as hoards of fundamental ostriches like to think).
The edge is near!

You transgender? Well we can, make sure you are never hired, respected, safe, assholes can get away with cruelty even though you are not cruel. Oh mentally ill? you have no rights at all,we can fill your body with drugs, tie you down like some weird S/m scene and make it so no one takes you seriously because you are now crazee and many will hate you and deny you are suffering, call you an addict or a loser even when you aren't one. They'll call you a freeloader,a liar, moocher even when you are not that way, because faux news tells them so.Ignorant lazy greedy doctors can blame physical problems as being all in your head because medicaid does not pay enough for a skilled doctor's time,so we'll just ignore the facts shall we,lose the weight blah blah, pretend psych meds don't mess with your body,..etc.etc.etc. you lost half a tooth MA don't cover dentistry,You have to pay out of pocket, and you get SSI,after the dentist ios through with you you might have 100 bucks for the rest of the month,or you can hurt for three watch it get worse and "save up" or wait a year for the dental school..ain't this country grand.

Watched as a challenged person got of the Grey-Dog at about 12:15 at night 2 weeks ago. Yes Just out of curiosity, checked the county lock-up bookings later that night, sure as shit, there that person was. Booked as a homeless person no permanent address under the influence of a Narcotic drug.

The Ugly: the closing of mental health hospitals in California and across the United States. Is it any wonder that California seems to have all of the crazy homeless people? State mental hospitals were taken away by Governor Reagan in the seventies, and federal mental health programs were later taken away by President Reagan in the eighties.
When Ronald Reagan was governor of California he systematically began closing down mental hospitals, later as president he would cut aid for federally-funded community mental health programs. It is not a coincidence that the homeless populations in the state of California grew in the seventies and eighties. The people were put out on the street when mental hospitals started to close all over the state.
Seeing an increase in crime, and brutal murders by Herb Mullin, a mental hospital patient, the state legislature passed a law that would stop Reagan from closing even more state-funded mental health hospitals. But Reagan would not be outdone. In 1980, congress proposed new legislation (PL 96-398) called the community mental health systems act (crafted by Ted Kennedy), but the program was killed by newly-elected President Ronald Reagan. This action ended the federal community mental health centers (see timeline on this link) program and its funding.
In closing, the next time you pass by a homeless person in downtown San Francisco screaming to themselves at the top of their lungs, remember Reagan. And if your kids need to go out and get jobs at age 9 to pay down the national debt, be sure to tell them that they can thank Ronald Reagan, and now President Bush, for their misfortune.

(4,748 posts)Wish they would have dropped Harry "No Filibuster Reform" Reid someplace other than DC. Seriously though, this is deplorable and probably many other states do something similar. If you have mental health issues and not much money in this country, you get to work out your problems under the overpass or in a jail cell. We are a hard hearted country.

(10,597 posts)...the state of Harry Reid, of course. This is a throw-it-away, sweep-it-under-the-rug,
out-of-sight-out-of-mind society. Folks, welcome to Ayn Rand World, formerly the USA.
Read the entire article and it did say that many of these patients, in their busting-at-the-seams mental institutions, are poor citizens who can't cope with poverty. Poverty is a killer, let me tell you. If it doesn't kill you physically, it will mentally.
