Had health troubles in March, and I'm not waiting until he leaves us to recognize what a great liberal, moral voice he has been. Last month, he had problems at a performance. Here's hoping he's OK, but thanks for all his great performances. I was inspired to remember him because another thread noted Carroll O'Connor - another great humanitarian.
I don't want Ed and all he has done to be neglected, then remembered when he's gone.
He has always had spunk. And I HATE spunk.

I love Ed Asner. He's always been there to tell it like it is. And proudly liberal, all the way.

(24,721 posts)I loved him as Mary's boss on the Mary Tyler Moore show, & I loved him in the more serious Lou Grant spinoff. (I was furious when that highly-rated, popular show was taken off the air due to Reagan's animosity toward Ed Asner.)
I loved him in the Christmas movie, "The Gathering". He could play the most lovable grump (while being a marshmallow inside).
But knowing that Ed Asner is a Democrat & having seen him advocate for those who need a voice makes him an honest-to-goodness hero & a good man in my eyes.
He is dear to me.

(237 posts)I was an extra in a movie he was in, a long time ago, and the production was cheaping out and giving the extras (of which there were only a few) bag lunches with a baloney sandwich and an apple in there instead of the regular meal everyone else got. This did not sit right with Ed, who had apparently sniffed out this mild labor-related injustice by some preternatural lefty sixth sense. He set it aright with a few well-chosen words to the 1st AD, and we were eating like kings thereafter.
In conclusion: a prince of a guy, and very friendly to we lowly extras.

(6,151 posts)Long enough to develop a fierce aversion to many on the top rung of the ladder for the way they treated people less elevated.
But everyone except the jerks LOVED Ed Asner, and so did I even though sadly I never got to meet him in person. But people said he was every bit as nice as Tom Snyder whom I did get to know a little.
If anyone's in touch with Ed, please let him know about this thread. He deserves to see it. And if any jerks show up, I don't know what I'll do but it won't be pretty.

(19,831 posts)April 9, 2013 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Actors Ed Asner and Marion Ross will perform before a live audience during a recording of a new sitcom, 'I've got a Life in Kalamazoo,' at the Museum of Broadcast Communications (MBC).
The performances on Saturday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 14 at 2 p.m. will be filmed in front of a live audience in order to pitch the show to network executives. Audience members will be asked for feedback. Tickets, which range from $22 to $155, are now on sale at LifeInKzoo.com.
The Museum of Broadcast Communications is located at 360 N. State Street in downtown Chicago.
(RELEASE) Described as Everybody Loves Raymond meets Will & Grace, I've Got A Life in Kalamazoo is based on producer Teresa L. Thome's one-woman show, Warm Cheese. It features Nilah Hoyer (Vicki Lewis), a small town singer/performer who, in the midst of a mid-life crisis, attempts to move her career to the next level. With her best friend, Clayton Croft, living the fabulous life in Chicago urging her to move to the Windy City, and a husband who merrily rolls along with all the punches, this is finally her moment. With one phone call, a turn of events occurs and Nilah must stay in Kalamazoo reluctantly to care for her aging parents, Bob, her lovable, humorous and politically incorrect father, and Imelda, her domineering, hypochondriac mother.

"El Dorado", and the ending scene from "The Gathering" with Maureen Stapleton .
Democrat Mike Farrell was in the same production of "The Monkey Trial". He autographed a shot from the 60's series COMBAT!. He was a ARMY doctor with the rank of captain well before M*A*S*H.

(53,339 posts)I have an undeveloped pic somewhere of me with him. Another DUer introduced us before our anti-Iraq War entry in a local parade where Ed and his grandson led us, riding in in a convertible.
He always stood up for his beliefs, no matter the consequence. A very courageous man throughout his life. I hope we'll have him around for a good while longer.

(136 posts)For years I viewed Ed Asner simply as an actor, a talented and engaging actor. In the past few years I have become more and more aware of Ed Asner, as humanitarian, as political activist, etc. Good health and continued success for him and also for his family.
He taught me an excellent lesson, don't give all these extremist, right wing outlets and advocates the legitimacy of recognition as anything other than what they are. Piss of Fox News and all these other right wingers.
Thanks Ed Asner, many years and health rain down on you.

(5,275 posts)I just heard from him, wanting me to join him in the democratic socialists.
Democratic socialism with just a dash of capitalism - people can still get rich, it just gets much harder to be dirty filthy rich. Sounds good to me.
Everyone should be entitled to a quality education through to a doctorate, and quality health care through life - with those policies health care savings through lack of stress would be significant - oh and we could get real, a bandaid should not cost $45.
Oh and thanks for all the laughs through the years Ed!

Human creation is never perfect, and to want to be just like everyone else ignores the person you are. Starabella teaches many things, especially self-esteem, which almost always results in respect and kindness for others. I wish I had this book to share with my son when he was a child.

seeing him with Mary.
Growing up and learning more about him, and realizing that he was so consistently on the side of what is fair and just and kind, just made me love him more.
