something satisfying about seeing someone who pulls the "do you know who I am?" card, get arrested. And driving in the wrong lane? They should be thankful to the cop that he pulled them over.
Reese Witherspoon and husband Jim Toth were arrested over the weekend in a DUI-related incident in Atlanta, Ga. Variety reports that the Oscar-winning actress and CAA agent, who was operating the vehicle, were pulled over early Friday morning after a cop noticed the car driving in the wrong lane.
According to a police report obtained by Variety, "Mrs. Witherspoon began to hang out the window and say that she did not believe I was a real police officer. I told Mrs. Witherspoon to sit on her butt and be quiet."
The report continued: "Mrs. Witherspoon asked, 'Do you know my name?' I answered, 'No, I don't need to know your name.' I then added, 'right now.' Mrs. Witherspoon stated, 'You're about to find out who I am.'... Mrs. Witherspoon also stated, 'You're going to be on national news.' I advised Mrs. Witherspoon that was fine."
Witherspoon is charged with disorderly conduct for getting into a verbal fight with the police officer. Toth has been charged with driving while intoxicated.

She has since issued a very sincere and thoughtful apology.

(19,089 posts)Of course a Reese Witherspoon arrest is going to be national news (unfortunately), and so of course the police officer is going to know he will be exposed in the national news meat market .... I would think this would inspire a cop to follow through and gain national notoriety ...
Maybe even put on his best Blues and have a news conference ...
This is pretty weak stuff ...

(19,089 posts)Yeah .. it was a stupid thing to say .. my point is: It might be an impetus to carry the arrest forward, especially for those who dont mind a little face time on national TV ... He is still going to find out who she is on national TV ....
I greatly doubt this cop cared for that .... He was just doing his job .... Still, the comment was lame, but of little consequence ....

(15,024 posts)humble and contrite can be difficult.
And so long as she's in demand as an actress (she's got four films in production at the moment), it'll remain difficult for her to have much humility. Arrogance, to a degree, is a desired trait in that field.

(45,319 posts)Is he letting us know he thinks she should be named Mrs Toth? Drips of attitude and sexism. Cop may have had this coming as Ms. Witherspoon was not driving the vehicle. He arrested her for talking rudely to him.

(1,956 posts)... that didn't "drip of sexism"?
Bluenorthwest
(45,319 posts)'Do you know my name' actually seems like a good question. Her husband's name is Toth. She might be Mrs Toth, or Ms Witherspoon, but not Mrs Witherspoon. He calls her this several times. It is not her name. Her question was 'do you know my name' perhaps because he was calling her by the wrong name.
Did he call Mr Toth 'Mr Witherspoon'? Just wondering.

(16,646 posts)The proper salutation would be "Mrs." followed by whatever her legal name is. I am presuming it is Reese Witherspoon. You don't lose the title just because you don't take your husband's name. It will cause no shortage of confusion however.

(16,646 posts)You can call yourself, legally on formal documents, Mrs. Jane Smith even if Jane Smith is your birth name. Heard a bunch-o-lawyers discussing this once related to some contractual case they were working.

(26,582 posts)Following her arrest with her husband, Jim Toth, early Friday morning after he was pulled over under suspicion of driving while intoxicated in Atlanta, Reese Witherspoon has released the following statement through her rep.
"Out of respect for the ongoing legal situation, I cannot comment on everything that is being reported right now. But I do want to say, I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said," the statement says.
It continues: "It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. The words I used that night definitely do not reflect who I am. I have nothing but respect for the police and I'm very sorry for my behavior."

Wow, she should have just apologized rather than saying it was a scary situation and she was frightened for her husband. Seemed pretty routine for a DUI arrest.
It was frightening and scary for everyone else on the road that night when he was swerving in and out of traffic!!

LENNON: "The stories were all so exaggerated, but... We were all in a restaurant, drinking, not eating, as usual at those gatherings, and I happened to go take a pee and there was a brand-new fresh Kotex, not Tampax, on the toilet. You know the old trick where you put a penny on your forehead and it sticks? I was a little high and I just picked it up and slapped it on and it stayed, you see. I walked out of the bathroom and I had a Kotex on my head. Big deal. Everybody went 'Ha-ha-ha' and it fell off, but the press blew it up."
