18-year-old headed for Syria arrested by FBI on terror charges in Chicago

A US man allegedly planning to engage in terrorism in Syria was arrested at a Chicago airport after months of surveillance, the FBI said.

...

Agents had been monitoring Abdella Ahmad Tounisi, 18, for some time due to his friendship with a man who was arrested in September after a botched attempt to detonate a bomb outside a Chicago bar.

...

He eventually happened upon a website set up by the FBI to look like a recruiting page for the al Qaeda-affiliated Jabhat al-Nusrah and spent about three weeks making plans with an undercover agent.

(I thought it might take longer, but it's already happening: domestic spillover of US funding of religious extremist insurgency in Syria. It is shameful that our government is giving $250,000,000 to fund this jihad - just as misguided as Reagan in Afghanistan.)

in weighing the pros and cons, these "democracy activists" wind up causing much more damage to the target-countries than they do at home. Perhaps that's because they're more isolated here, not as well-trained, don't have a continuous flow of sophisticated weapons from neighboring states going to them.. just primitive types of IEDs they have to make on their own. Which is why the US government will continue supporting these types of insurgencies. Plus death squads/para groups are more economical than invasions or airstrikes.

Abdella Ahmad Tounisi, U.S. Teenager, Arrested Over Alleged Al Qaeda Links

April 20 (Reuters) - An 18-year-old Chicago-area man accused of planning to join an al Qaeda-linked group fighting in Syria has been arrested by the FBI, the agency said on Saturday.

Abdella Ahmad Tounisi of Aurora, Illinois, was taken into custody late on Friday as he prepared to board a plane at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport bound for Turkey, the FBI said in a statement.

It added that Tounisi was a friend of Adel Daoud, an American accused of trying to stage a bombing outside a downtown Chicago bar last year. The agency said Tounisi had not been involved in that plot.

Tounisiappeared before a U.S. magistrate on Saturday on one count of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. He was ordered held until his next court appearance on Tuesday, the FBI said.
