Midwest Floods Turn Deadly

(The Weather Channel) Flooding in the Midwest has turned fatal, with at least two deaths blamed on flash flooding and a third suspected. States of emergency were declared in half a dozen states, residents were evacuated and roads were closed in the affected areas.

More rain was expected in the affected areas Tuesday into Wednesday, however rainfall amounts from this latest frontal system will be much less this time around.

On Sunday, more than 45 river/stream gauges were in major flood in parts of Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan.

Below is a state-by-state look at the latest from the ongoing massive flooding in the Midwest.

Illinois

* Record flooding has been been recorded at around a dozen river gauges in the state. New record crests include: Des Plaines River at Des Plaines and Riverside IL; Vermilion River at Leonore IL; East Branch DuPage River at Bolingbrook; North Branch Chicago River in Chicago; Illinois River at Morris, Ottawa, and LaSalle IL; Fox River at Algonquin Tailwater IL. Also records at Spoon River, Seville IL; Lamoine River at Colmar IL. The Rock River at Bryon hit a record, but the period of record only dates to 2000. ....................(more)

doomed to fail. Like straightening out the Mississippi or using Everglades water for dairy farms. very very very expensive.

In NJ there is regular flooding where construction has been allowed to damage natural drainage, they want to build a 40 foot in diameter tunnel - ending in my town, than you very much, which would put us underwater and flood older town areas. In reality it is much cheaper to buy back the land and turn it into natural drainage.
This is like taking icebergs to deserts, good idea in theory, not in practicality.

For the most part we do just fine without screwing with our ecosystem by diverting flood waters here. You would just be upsetting the balance of nature and discouraging the conservation measures we already have and are putting in place.

Not to mention I hate mosquitoes and humidity, we don't need anymore of that either.
