Boat where Dzhokhar Tsarnaev hid 'looked like Swiss cheese' after shootout
The boat that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was found hiding in looked like "Swiss cheese" after the Boston bombing suspect's shootout with police, the boat's owner told neighbours.
Tsarnaev was taken into custody after a Watertown resident, named locally as David Henneberry, went to check on his boat and found Tsarnaev inside. Swat teams moved in and a gun fight ensued, resulting in Tsarnaev being captured. He is in hospital in a serious condition.
On Saturday, Henneberry was being hailed as the man who helped end a tense 22-hour manhunt, which, until his phone call to police, had been fruitless.
But it came at a cost. The boat a source of immense pride for the owner, according to local residents was no longer seaworthy, being, as it was, riddled with bullet holes.

(60,010 posts)He was wounded from earlier incident, and scanner reports said multiple times that he was barely moving in the boat at all.
They bull horned for him to come out with his hands up, but he did not move at all.
They threw about 12 flashbangs in and around the boat, saying they were being cautious in case he had a bomb/suicide vest.
Apparently the fuel tank was half full, but that did not seen to be a concern.
That was my take listening on scanner and from Tweets coming from the area.

(18,184 posts)because CNN (and other news channels) reported hearing about 20 rounds of (semi) automatic gunfire. Then all the patrol cars etc. rushed to the scene.
So probably the first cop or cops on the scene opened fire on the boat and injured the perp but were then told to stand down and hold the perimeter until reinforcements arrived.

(23,340 posts)all the firing took place at the first contact between the police and him in the boat. The younger brother was shooting through a hole poked in the plastic cover.
then things stopped and they got down to trying to negotiate with him.
I would point out that with the thermal imaging from the overhead helicopter, if they wanted to kill him from that helicopter, it would be quite easy.

(25,485 posts)Would that still make it look like swiss cheese?

(23,340 posts)they would certainly make swiss cheese out of the cover.
The cover was ripped off by a robot arm on a police vehicle of some kind.

(15,189 posts)And they worry about this man's boat. He could probably sell it for more than it is worth online to some nut who needs to have it.

(111,141 posts)Dumb kid. He should have known better than to shoot at the cops.
I have to think he's going to be really pissed off in a few days when he wakes up and he's still alive. So much for martyrdom. His big brother will be hogging all the virgins.

(978 posts)I heard here on DU that it was a "boat" but for about an hour the CNN talking heads kept calling it an "open structure with a gas tank nearby." LOL.
I have a boat and never thought of it as an "open structure" before. Hey honey let's take the "open structure" out for a cruise today. LOL.

(18,807 posts)I'm assuming it's technical terminology that comes out in those sorts of situations.
CNN likes to glom onto any unusual phrasing of anything and repeat it ad nauseam, I've noticed.

(17,528 posts)I wonder why they shot so many rounds when it was so important they question him and needed him alive? Wasn't that sort of irresponsible? There must have been other ways to get him out alive...they knew hes was already wounded and bleeding badly.

(62,683 posts)It was the gunfire that started this episode. I don't know if those first on the scene just began blasting away, or if he fired at them. That will be interesting to learn.

(51,076 posts)at the time the story was written the writer wasn't sure of the condition of the boat but he was sure of the mans love of his boat. So sad for him that there was this casualty of his property also.
In these cases no one is the winner
