Buy only granular or dust forms of gold. When you go to buy your groceries and beer, that will let you pay only what it's worth. Store your granular gold or gold dust in empty cotton tobacco bags, purchased in quantity on ebay. Carry a portable gram scale with you always, so you'll be ready to weigh out the correct amount. Always carry your gold on the opposite hip from your pistol, of course.

Silver

Silver, of course, is a utilitarian libertarian investment metal. Use it to cast bullets for your hand-loaded ammo. It was good enough for the Lone Ranger, so it will be good enough for you.
