In economic and trade policy with China, which is more important:

Stronger relations with China

Or

Getting tougher with China

This wording is taken from a Pew Research poll in October 2012 which found a distinct difference in the policy choices of Democrats, republicans and Independents when it came to economic and trade policy with China.

Of course, an internet poll such as the one below is not as scientific as one done by Pew or any other reputable polling firm, but I thought it would be interesting to compare their results from polling the general public to those here in the DU universe.

If you have specifics on the policy you would like to see, please elaborate.

What we should be doing is using our economic interdependency as a starting point to improve relations and perhaps exert some influence on China that could lead to them improving conditions for their people. I am hopeful that the Xi administration will lead to human rights improvements and perhaps he will be willing to look to the USA for inspiration on some issues.

tough" on China is not purely a right-wing sentiment however. I'm sure romney thought his tough China policy was appealing to a certain segment of his base and, at least in his mind, to some independents and Democrats, as well.
