Dead M.I.T. Officer, Wounded Cop Shot Hours Apart Were Friends

TOM KLUDT 1:05 PM EDT, SATURDAY APRIL 20, 2013

Two Boston area officers allegedly shot by the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings — one killed, one seriously wounded — were friends who met in 2010 while training at a police academy, the New York Times reported.

Sean A. Collier, a 26-year-old officer at M.I.T., was killed in a possible ambush of his vehicle by the two suspects on Thursday night. Hours later, Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority police officer Richard H. Donohue was wounded during an intense firefight with the two suspects. Donohue was listed in critical but stable condition, as of Friday evening.

The two men were both members of the M.B.T.A. Transit Police Academy’s 25th Municipal Police Officers Class in 2010, according to the Times.

Sean Collier, slain MIT cop, volunteered at gym where Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev boxed

Collier, a beloved campus officer of two years, didn't even have a chance to draw his gun before he was killed. He was shot as bombers robbed a 7-Eleven Thursday night.

In a chilling coincidence, Collier recently began volunteering at the same boxing gym where dead bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev trained several years ago.

But Bob Covino, who co-founded the Somerville Boxing Club, said it was unlikely the two crossed paths.

7-Eleven robbery not related to Boston bombing suspects

Natalie DiBlasio, USA TODAY6:26 p.m. EDT April 19, 2013

Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev visited a 7-Eleven, but did not rob it
The photo of the crime was not taken at a 7-Eleven
The Cambridge 7-Eleven was robbed by someone else last night

There was a 7-Eleven robbery in Cambridge last night, but it had nothing to do with the Boston Marathon bombing suspects.

Margaret Chabris, the director of corporate communication at 7- Eleven, says the surveillance video of the crime was not taken at a 7-Eleven and that the suspect that did rob the 7-Eleven does not look like Tamerlan or Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

"The suspect in the photos for that particular 7-Eleven robbery looks nothing like the suspects," Chabris says. "The police or someone made a mistake. Someone was confused."

At an earlier press conference morning, when Alben described the manhunt and standoff that resulted in the death of an MIT police officer, he also said that the two brothers robbed a 7-Eleven.
