When the 2 Boston bombers got in a gunfight later, what kind of guns did they use?

From the audio, at least one was clearly a semi-auto (as opposed to bolt-action, pump, etc) but does anyone know the make and model?

Links appreciated.

(Yes, I tried googling, but with no good results)

edit: and, followup question, how were they obtained? Gun show loophole?

It will be very interesting to hear about the capacity of their clips and type of guns.

I did see a claim that they took police weapons. Unverified at this point.

Younger brother could have purchased firearms but MA laws are quite strict.

and also could not be licensed in MA. Whatever they had they had illegally.

I believe that pressure cooker bombs are illegal in MA as well. That law didn't stop them either.

On edit: as niether brother could be licensed for handgun ownership, they could not have purchased legally in the state of MA.

Was it clear which gunfire was theirs and which was from the police? Was there any indication that the two brothers were using rifles rather than handguns?

Whether it was rifles or handguns, I would assume that they were semi-auto. I very much doubt that anyone outside of the LE on the scene would know make or model at this point.

No gun show loophole: Massachusetts requires a firearms license for all sales, including private sales. I believe the older brother had a prior domestic violence conviction, which would have disqualified him. The younger brother may have qualified for a long gun, but his age (under 21) would have disqualified him for a handgun.

There was definitely sporadic handgun fire to start, the pop pop pop in bursts of 8-10 rounds but then there were bursts of a much more powerful crack crack in rapid succession the crack had a mechanical activation sound with it. I thought semi-auto rifle. Then there was total chaos for about ten seconds. The sound of many people firing simultaneously. That must of been when the one ran at police with the bomb.

if they mainly had only the murdered cop's guns? (And --thank god-- the devices that did not go off).

... that they used to murder the campus cop. Then they got his gun or guns. I don't know if MIT campus cops carry only handguns or whether they also have shotguns or patrol rifles in their cars.

One of the devices that they threw at the cops did go off.

11. Handguns, a rifle and at least six bombs -- three of which exploded - were found at the scene early"

Apr 2013

"Handguns, a rifle and at least six bombs -- three of which exploded -- were found at the scene early Friday after officers first confronted the two Boston Marathon bombing suspects in the darkness of a residential street, the Watertown, Massachusetts, police chief told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on Saturday.

A single officer was the first to encounter the two cars that Tamerlan and Dzhokar Tsarnaev were driving, just before 1 a.m. Friday, Chief Edward Deveau said.

Before the officer could get backup, the two cars stopped, and the brothers got out.

"They jump out of the car and unload on our police officer," Deveau said "They both came out shooting -- shooting guns, handguns. He's under direct fire, very close by. He has to jam it in reverse and try to get himself a little distance."

Five other police officers, including two who had just finished their shifts, then arrived at what Deveau called a "very tight area" in the middle of an intense shootout. One of the officers was wounded.

"We estimate there was over 200 shots fired in a five- to 10-minute period," Deveau said.

One of the brothers threw an explosive at the officers. They later discovered it was a pressure cooker bomb, similar to the ones used at the marathon Monday, the chief said.
