Yes, I know it's CNN... we're in a hospital and Faux is the only other option
Still, Anderson Cooper was interviewing a girl who knew the family and went to their house over the years. She said during the last couple years, the woman went from flamboyant clothing to dark clothing, headscarf, discussion of 9/11 as an inside job designed to demonize Islam. I recall discussion that neither son was particularly religious/nationalistic until recently. My wife said she had seen a report the uncle and extended family were estranged and no longer associated with them.
This might explain the father's statement that the son was an "angel," insistence on U.S. Govt. conspiracy/framing, etc. And of course both parents are now back in Russia, and the older son had recently visited. It appears the whole family may have been radicalized... maybe by the father. Still, no excuse at all. Who knows at this point, but it seems a possibility.

(6,019 posts)I mentioned some of the father's statements. He also basically said there would be hell to pay if the other brother was killed.

Her answers presumably would be the same regardless of who interviewed her.

(2,237 posts)I would guess that the brother who spent time in Russia may have been radicalized by someone there.
I have a Russian born co-worker who became a US citizen, and from what I understand from him that part of Russia the two were from is almost entirely Muslims. They hate the rest of Russia, and have a history of producing terrorists. Most of the terrorists they produce attack Russia however (and probably attacked the Soviet Union to when it was still around), not other countries like the US.

(11,589 posts)was his insistence about his brother not being able to reach the boys... it was almost as if there was something unsaid.
He said he had nothing more to do with that family-- meaning (to me) that part of the family.
I got the feeling (and this is just a feeling) that he was alluding to the Mom.
It appears the parents left for Russia about a year ago -- something is very strange here.
The time frame of the families travels is going to reveal a lot.

(7,133 posts)There are 2 recent photos of the mother making the rounds and she is not wearing any headscarf.
The father is only saying what many parents of killers say -- my boy is such a nice boy, wouldn't hurt a flea. He's in denial.
