A Chechen-born terrorist is not necessarily a *Chechen Terrorist*

A Muslim connected to Chechnya can be a global jihadist as surely as an individual person from Chechnya can be a Presbyterian or anything else.

But a *Chechen Muslim Terrorist* is a Chechen Muslim engaged in asymmetrical warfare against Russia seeking the national independence of Chechnya, which is a part of Russia currently. Like these guys:

But a Muslim connected in some way to Chechnya can believe anything he wants. He doesn't have to be all about Chechen independence.

And one can be radicalized by global jihadists in Chechnya. There are many there. Some Jihadists go to Chechnya the same way they went to Iraq. Wherever Muslims are fighting non-Muslims is a place to be if one wants into the fight.

(Osama Bin Laden made his reputation with the Afghan mujahedeen, fighting Russia, but ended up hating just about everybody -- there are cross-currents, as with most things.)

If this man wanted to fight Russia he would have stayed in Russia after whatever radicalization he experienced. For whatever reason, he did not.

(Lest Mr. Pitt object, I will note that I am not an expert on Chechnya. But there is some fast-and-loose terminology on the news that can be confusing because "Chechen terrorist" really means something. It implies a whole cause and purpose and history that these guys may have had little to do with.)

From what I heard, their father was in a different area near Russia

The one still alive is 19, been in US since 2002, has zero ties to Chechnya itself.

Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev flew in and out of John F. Kennedy Airport last year and was out of the country for six months, and investigators said they want to know if he received any terror training while he was overseas, NBC 4 New York has learned.

Travel records obtained by NBC 4 New York show Tsarnaev left New York on Jan. 12, 2012 for Sheremetyevo, Russia. He stayed overseas and returned to JFK on July 17.

The travel documents show a photo of a bearded Tsarnaev. The documents show the terror suspect was born on Oct. 21, 1986 and first entered the U.S. through JFK on July 19, 2003.

The documents show it was not until Friday that U.S. officials determined he was “a person or instrument that may pose a threat to the security of the United States.”

BTW, there was no incident at JFK, so the security there did a good job, as nothing happened there.

Many people with relatives overseas take long vacations, being that the distance is so far.

I think the family of Sean Collier is the one who should be the one to have sympathy and the others who were insanely hurt at the marathan and aftermath.

11. Yeah, living in Chechnya is JUST like the average American family....

Nobody knows anything about the family yet. The father has vowed retribution for his sons. Parents, aunt - all of them believe they were "framed" except for the one uncle Ruslan Tsarnaev.

Edited to add that the radicalism of their homeplace is one thing but we don't even know what they did for 6 months while they were visiting there. There is a well established pipeline for Chechens to Pakistan for militant training.
