Camera recording people in public have helped solve many crimes. And it will just get better.
I am against warrant-less wiretaps, against warrant-less GPS tracking, against drug sniffing dogs, which are basically controlled by their handlers, against police confiscating property for drug crimes, against stop-and-frisk laws that are abused by NYC police.
Hell, I am not even in favor of DUI checkpoints as I think they infringe on innocent people with no probable cause.
But cameras recording people in public are fine with me. Not for traffic tickets, but for criminal activity.
These Boston bombers got caught because of public cameras. The more the better.

(10,340 posts)I don't know if I would feel comfortable knowing that every single step I took in public - every single thing that I did, looked at, etc - was being monitored on a daily basis.
Should we allow police drones to fly over cities as well, collecting surveillance?

(10,942 posts)somewhere. I don't care if a camera is filming my movement past it. I am not out doing something illegal, stealing or cheating on a spouse. So, I don't give a shit that I am being filmed. If someone watching film of me want to be bored, I say let them knock themselves out.

(10,942 posts)oppose public cameras are afraid of. Are they out doing crimes and cheating on a spouse and don't want to be seen?

(45,851 posts)I've also had some seriously horrible interactions with cops in the past.
If you are lower class then police are for the most part *not* your friend and if you also happen to be a minority or otherwise "different" then "officer friendly" becomes even less friendly.
Not everyone thinks cops are an unalloyed good and we have some seriously fucked up laws in this country that some cops love to use as a pretext for screwing with people.

(30,884 posts)and technological advances have eroded our privacy. We expect to be seen in public but we object to having every move we make captured electronically, stored indefinitely, and used for profiling us when we've done nothing against the law.
You have no problem with it, that's fine for you but those of us who objected aren't fucking insane. We just remember that until recently Americans embraced privacy as a cherished liberty.

(80,708 posts)The fact that something like 80% of our tax dollar law enforcement resources go towards making sure cancer grannies don't smoke pot, that sort of thing.

(22,143 posts)This way we'll know where everyone is at all times. Maybe we could set it up so it can record your every word and action as well. Need to know where someone was and what they did at any point? A simple click takes you right to it.
Because this is the land of the free and the home of the brave.

(22,143 posts)I find the idea of having my every public move servailed and monitored repellant. I feel it is intrusive.
It doesn't really matter though, we've been in a police state for quite some time now. It's not going to change, not for the better anyway.
You'll get what you want. You pretty much already have it.

(6,635 posts)files good for helping to catch criminals, public and very visible cameras are effective as deterrents to crime. I agree that cameras are a cost effective use of resources, and are beneficial in proving both innocence, and guilt.
