Sunil Tripathi family grateful Boston explosion allegations resolved (Reddit apologizes)

Now that the FBI and local authorities have identified suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings, the family of missing Brown University student Sunil Tripathi is hoping to resume the earnest search for their missing loved one.

"The last eighteen hours have generated tremendous and painful attention--on social media platforms Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit, as well as from television media inquiries--linking Sunil to the video stills released by the FBI yesterday afternoon," a family statement said.

"Unequivocally, we have known that neither individual suspected as responsible for the incident in Boston was Sunil," said Akhil Tripathi, Sunil's father.

The Tripathi family expressed their sympathies for victims and others affected by the cowardly acts of violence in the Boston community.

also Reddit Moderator apologizes to the family

I'd like to extend the deepest apologies to the family of Sunil Tripathi for any part we may have had in relaying what has turned out to be faulty information. We cannot begin to know what you're going through and for that we are truly sorry. Several users, twitter users, and other sources had heard him identified as the suspect and believed it to be confirmed. We were mistaken.

This event shows exactly why the no personal information until confirmation rule is in place. Out of respect for Tripathi and his family, I ask that users here please remove any and all links about him. Thank you.

To my knowledge, nothing that has transpired thus far has come from Internet detectives. The FBI made the photo IDs. It's true the public could have been helpful in giving those faces names and perhaps locations. But the perps decided to rob a 7-11, kill an MIT policeman, hijack a car, etc. before that could really happen. They located themselves.

A number of people, in the meantime, have been cruelly and falsely accused.
