Did you know that in a number of states (think it's 13) rapists are allowed child visitation and the victim can't stop him from coming to her house? Paul Ryan tried to pass a law that rapist could have the final decision if their pregnant victims could have abortions.

Our system is less perfect every day.

In post #52 she stated that in 13 states now the rapist is allowed to see his child. And some states are forcing rape on women by demanding the use of an internal ultrasound before you can get an abortion. The RW is constantly bringing up bills to take away women's rights.

That is what the poster was speaking of and what you called "blather".

However to call the US a "rape culture" is so far over the top that it does more harm than good in focusing people's mind on the problems.

'Blather' was the wrong word. I should have called it 'sabotage' or perhaps 'misogyny.'

Everyone's asking "Why attack a sporting event like the Boston Marathon?" To me, if this does turn out to be politically motivated, the obvious connection that no one to my knowledge has noted is that it may well have to do with the Russians' hosting of the Winter Olympics next year in Sochi, which is on the Black Sea straight down the mountains from Chechnya.

The last time I taught the Chechnya rebellion, I assigned Tolstoy's Hadji Murad, which is a good read for undergrads that underscores to students that this conflict isn't just about the end of the USSR or global jihad, but has deep historical roots. There's also a good Russian film called "Prisoner of the Mountains" that humanizes the conflict well, and which is based on another Tolstoy story.

maybe some connection--I wouldn't be surprised. But I think it's more likely just that the Boston Marathon was convenient and on the radar of these two sports fans from Boston.

Such a torn up area of the world they come from. Maybe the Winter Olympics there brings some healing? We can hope.

38. I met a Cheneyan hired killer once when I was in Russia
Fri Apr 19, 2013, 03:33 PM
Apr 2013

I was meeting with the owner of a small furniture production facility in St. Petersburg, having the usual shots of vodka and hanging out in his facility office along with his girlfriend and a few other Russian associates. His girlfriend kept looking out the window, and suddenly the festive friendly mood turned very subdued when his girlfriend said "he's here". The facility owner immediately told me in Russian, which I spoke and understood okay back then, to NOT talk about business, and to say I am only here as a friend. Soon, a tall caucasian with blond hair and blue eyes walks in, with a bleach-blond hooker-looking gal on each arm. He calmly sits down and small talk ensued, some of which I didn't quite get. Then the tall guy looks at me, introduces himself, and informs me that he is Chechnyan, and although he is Muslim nobody can tell that by looking at him. He calmly tells me that his business is enforcement for a local mafia group of Cheneyans, and that he is hired sometimes to kill people. He opens up his suit jacket to display a pistol in a shoulder holster and smiles. More small talk, then he gets up and leaves, after which everybody in the room sighs with relief. The business owner then informs me that this man visits about once a week to check up on his business, to find out if he's made any money that he can extort. That's business in Russia, the owner tells me.

It is interesting to read up on the history of Chechnya. It is a region that perhaps more than most others has been defined by constant invasion, war, treachery and the most extreme forms of evil that the human race can perpetrate. Not all people from Chechnya are "bad", of course, but I for one have always somewhat sympathized with the Russian efforts to subdue that region, and to deal harshly with the insurgents. There is a cold, evil, cruel streak that seems to be culturally imprinted on Chechnyans, and now we get a taste of it here in America.

Fri Apr 19, 2013, 03:49 PM

Indeed, that is probably true. We all know the big oil and neocon method of operation. Prop up a cruel dictator to control the population through murderous means, keep him well-paid and protected, take all the oil. Due to my exposure and experiences in Russia, and knowing the Russian attitudes toward Chechnya, I have always kept close tabs on news concerning that region. And there was a series of news stories some time not too long ago where there was speculation from the Russian side that American neocons/oil execs/Republicans were fomenting trouble in Chechnya with the goal of tapping into their oil. Knowing Republicans/neocons, it is hard to disbelieve speculation like that, IMO.
