She'd say "There are times I'm glad I'm old and won't have to deal with the mess we're making of the world."

As I get closer to the age she was when she expressed such sentiments, I try to retain more optimism than that...But there are times when I know how she felt.

14. Been a horrible week, what else can happen?

Horrible tragedy in my community, man committed suicide by carbon monoxide in his garage and his wife and both children died (fumes) trying to save him. Kids, 16 and 10, were beloved in the schools and community. We are reeling here on top of the horrors in Boston and Texas.

It's been pretty strange in this country for a while. In fact, I'd say that 'strange' is the new normal so it won't seem so...um, strange anymore.

On 9-11 my dad called his elderly cousin and said, "Terrible day, isn't it?"
