CNN: bomb suspects are Kyrgyz

CNN

[Updated 10:24 a.m. ET] More background on the brothers that several sources tell CNN are the suspects involved in Thursday night’s shootings and police chase and Monday’s Boston Marathon bombings:

The Tsarnaev brothers were Kyrgyz passport holders, and used those passports when applying for green cards in the United States, an official in the central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan said, according to CNN’s Ivan Watson.

This doesn’t mean they were born in Kyrgyzstan or that their family were Kyrgyz natives. Many Caucasus refugees received passports or refugee status in surrounding countries.

which actually gives a source (a photo essay by one of the two brothers), they originated from Dagestan, and lived in Kazakhstan. I also heard Kurdistan somewhere. My guess it is another of these examples where the media try to have something to say and do not know for a fact. The only thing that seems clear is that they come from somewhere in the former USSR and have been here for several years. I guess we will know the details soon enough.

Suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing appeared to embody the best of the American immigrant experience, having come from southern Russia, near war-torn Chechnya, more than five years ago, and assimilated into the local Cambridge community and culture.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, the alleged bomber pictured in a dark hat in FBI videos released Thursday, was a talented boxer with hopes of joining the US Olympic team. He was reportedly killed overnight in a shootout with police.

His brother, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, the suspect seen in FBI photos in a white cap, was a member of the class of 2011 at Cambridge Rindge & Latin School, and won a Cambridge City Scholarship that year. He was on the run Friday morning and the target of an unprecedented manhunt in Greater Boston.

In the photo essay, called “Will Box for Passport,” Tamerlan stops to answer a phone call while walking from his Mercedes to the Wai Kru Mixed Martial Arts center in Boston, where he practiced boxing. He has a long wool scarf wrapped fashionably around his neck and gleaming white leather slip-on shoes and is carrying an Oceanfly dufflebag.

The family left the Russian republic of Dagestan -- a predominantly Muslim region on the eastern border of Chechnya -- and lived for years in Kazakhstan before coming to the US as a refugee, according to the photo essay.

which had as a source unnamed officials and have turned out to be wrong. I am not saying this is wrong. I just wished people wait until something official was said. Does it actually matter whether we know that now or in two hours.

As I said somewhere else, this is our media at its worst.

If he wins enough fights... Tamerlan says he could be selected for the US Olympic team and be naturalized American. Unless his native Chechnya becomes independent, Tamerlan says he would rather compete for the United States than for Russia.
