and had nothing to do with it, wouldn't you be pounding on the FBI's door to clear yourself? We haven't heard about anything like that yet. It seems to me they have the right suspects for this reason!!!

(37,648 posts)Innocent people can be charged and convicted. I mean, how would I prove that I didn't leave the bomb? OTOH, I think it might help me some if I turn myself in. But I'd likely be arrested, wouldn't I? And that might cost me my job, or I'd have to drop out of school. It would seriously damage my life.
A lot to think about. I probably would turn myself in, thinking that if I don't, someone else will.

(25,183 posts)has most likely crawled back into the spider hole they had been hiding while hatching the plot. If that's a foreign country that has a habit of looking the other way when bad things happen to Americans, then we may never find them.

(25,183 posts)and you have your tickets ready to fly out that night, before the cops can figure out more than the most elementary things about the bombing.
Wouldn't surprise me a single bit if that's the way it went down.

(45,851 posts)First they were absolutely sure it was one guy, then they were absolutely sure it was someone completely different.
There seems to be considerable doubt as to whether either one of the anthrax "did it for sure" suspects had actually done anything.
Personally I wouldn't trust the FBI.

(30,439 posts)Wouldn't you want to come forward and clear your name? If these suspects don't come forward immediately, I'd say chances are good the FBI fingered the right guys.

(45,851 posts)It's not impossible to prove a negative but it's damn hard.
Then of course there's Richard Jewell, the FBI damn sure didn't do him any favors.
Cali_Democrat
(30,439 posts)I don't think they have much of a choice. Do you think they have an alternative?
Fumesucker
(45,851 posts)I'd basically be expecting to get railroaded and then if things did turn out OK I would get a pleasant surprise.
It wasn't all that long ago that it was shown that Texas executed a man that was more than likely innocent.

And then of course we have Scalia with his remark about "mere factual innocence" not being enough to overturn a properly reached death penalty verdict.
If you're not wealthy the justice system in this nation is really thoroughly fucked, I don't trust it at all.

(30,439 posts)If they don't come forward like now, it's obviously them.

(20,600 posts)If you look at the photos you can see their backpacks are shaped like they had those pressure cookers in them, that the FBI have already showed in other pictures was the bomb container. Also, the FBI already said they have video of them planting the bombs. It is them for sure. They are probably trying to get out of the country, or are already out of the country, that is my guess.

the FBI will find them in airport surveillance photos.

(1,273 posts)As far as we know the FBI doesn't have a name. They could be withholding that though, hoping they try to fly out.

(8,303 posts)After a couple of days, then yeah.
And I think many people would call a lawyer. If the FBI hasn't heard from either or both by Sunday, then it's probably the right call.

(80,708 posts)And if there is security camera footage that shows these guys dropping off backpacks in the exact spot the bombs went off, they're probably the right people.

moondust
(19,917 posts)But I think the FBI has probably matched up the backpacks, the timeline, their proximity to the blast sites, etc. I heard there is also a photo or film of one of the suspects laying his backpack down at one of the blast sites but the FBI has not released that photo/film yet.
It might not be a bad idea if the FBI tried to identify the exact make of the backpacks from the blasts, find out where they are sold, and alert the sellers to be on the lookout for buyers coming in to purchase another one to use as an alibi, or if they remember anybody buying two of the same model.

(45,851 posts)And still ruined Richard Jewell's life when he actually really was a hero in the situation.
I could easily have been a victim of that one so it hits close to home, I was at Olympic Park the night before the bombing, it was only a matter of chance that we didn't go the next night instead.
moondust
(19,917 posts)I would hope the FBI has learned lessons from that and other examples of false accusations, arrests, and imprisonments and they're doing it right this time.
Congratulations on your good luck!

(34,179 posts)Lots of people calling for blood on this one, and the FBI is once again under pressure. Their record in these situations is, well, questionable at best.
