Looks just like my husband. The one they show in profile looks so much like him - same "schnoz," bone structure, coloring, etc. My husband is of Polish, German and Irish descent. Just goes to show that you can't always tell just by looking at someone. Sadly, so many people on my facebook are making comments about "fucking Arabs and Muslims." Makes me so sick.

(8,303 posts)But we'll know in a little. Either they're innocent, in which case they'll be calling the FBI quite quickly, or they're not.
If they're not, they probably are out of the country by now.

I'm not trying to imply that they are foreigners, just that if they really are the perps they've had time to get under cover.

(2,121 posts)But besides all of that, let's face it. The threat from Islamic extremists is still very real, and this is shaping up to be another case of that. I wish it weren't, but it is what it is. We should join with Muslim Americans to condemn these extremists. These extremists would like nothing less than for there to be tension between Muslim and non-Muslim communities.

(14,881 posts)The close up shots of the suspects make it clear they could easily be homegrown white boys. The choice of venue for this -- Patriot's Day, tax day and the Marathon -- makes it at least as likely, if not moreso, homegrown wingnuts rather than any foreigners.

(10,942 posts)a lot of material to make a bomb. I am leaning more heavily toward homegrown. Chris Matthews brought up that the two men were heavily dressed for the Boston day and that could have meant that they came from a warm place outside of the country. Matthews failed to recognize that all of the South and much of the Interior West is warmer than Boston and that people coming from those regions would wear heavy clothing that acclimated people wouldn't wear.

(16,399 posts)Remember the several young men the FBI rounded up before they could carry out their plot....the kid who was going to blow up the Portland tree lighting? He was American.
RobinA
(9,884 posts)is running towards homegrown Islamic. This whole developing weirdness has a hybrid feel to it. Knocking over a convenience store? Shoot outs with police? Apparent total lack of a viable exit strategy? As American as apple pie. Pressure cooker bombs dropped in a busy place? Working in tandem? Definitely not American (so far at least). Hell, the last time an American decided to bomb the Establishment he took the front off a multiple story federal building.
Generalization and speculation, so don't tell me about it.

(14,881 posts)versus any other variety of homegrown extremists?
Because ime homegrown extremists are more likely to be anti-government or just plain nihilists. McVeigh. Waco. Rudolph. Columbine. Sandy Hook.

(14,881 posts)But they are also somewhat home-grown, having come here 10+ years ago.
(Interesting to note that yesterday I had written, somewhere around DU, a post suggesting that they may be local to Massachusetts, and then edited it out before posting for fear of getting flamed to death by locals.)
However, based on Suspect #1's facebook posting, it could yet be Nihilism winning over Islam. I read elsewhere on DU, from somebody with in-depth knowledge of the area, that Chechnyan Moslems tend to be more nationalist than jihadist.

(14,881 posts)A single, early report said one year ago.
Follow up reporting has repeatedly said they have been living at the same address in Cambridge, Mass for 10+ years, their parents have returned to Russia (their father is Russian, but worked in Chechnya where one was born. The other was born in Russia).
And as for the rest, well, back at ya

(29,025 posts)Just a couple of hours ago, it seems you were the only person on the board
who still thought they were "homegrown white boys" with right wing inclinations.
magical thyme
(14,881 posts)and I was far from the only one last night and before, who considered homebred white boys at least an equally likely scenario as Islamic. As I wrote above, I would not have been surprised if they had been from Massachusetts. There are many soft targets with lots of people, but the Boston Marathon and Patriot's Day has special meaning to people in Massachusetts. And while Mass is known as solid blue, liberal, I know from having lived there for 26 years, that outside of Boston I found many RW nutcase enclaves while searching for a farm. Nothing like having a german shepherd come bounding up to you with his owner calling, "Here Adolph! Here boy!" Or finding a little network of private lanes named, "The American Way" and "Patriot's Lane" and hand painted signs like, "keep out," "no trespassing," and "don't tread on me."
My first news this morning, once I had a chance to sit down and read, was that there was one from Chechnya and one with a surname identified as Indian. And then, both Chechnyan here for a year, one age 19 and 20. And then aged 19 and 27, and here for 10 years, father from Russia, etc.

(5,141 posts)Its my ex-husband! He lives in Massachusetts!! Maybe...but no, he wouldn't hurt a fly. He'd talk them to death, but that's about the worst he could do. He's a nice Jewish boy. Funny, but we were in Italy many years ago and the Italians were walking up to him speaking in their native tongue.
Tree-Hugger
(3,369 posts)He's a really super strong guy and can look intimidating, but the most harm he would do is talk someone to death about baseball. My husband is mistaken for an Italian as well. And Greek. No one ever guesses German, Polish or Irish.
