Well, that's the chant, anyway.

Serious answer, no, you do not have to own a gun.

no matter what the people who fund it request of them.

Kind of like Congress that way. 90% of the people support the measures Congress rejected yesterday.

I think you may have the NRA (and possibly Congress) confused with an institution involved with democracy.

Let's replace the beanbags in those guns the police use, with moon pies.

"Water" cannons with RC Cola? I'd be ok with that. Couldn't do it in New York City though... fire hoses are over 16 oz.

and vote for the board members.

I do not have the references handy but there are some rules which prevent sweeping change to the board. A certain percentage must be returning board members. It would take about three years to change a majority of the board.

IIRC only about 4% of NRA members vote in the board elections.

It doesn't give money to the lobby. If you are in the NRA (I was years ago) they keep asking you for money for the lobby.

You could join the NRA, but that wouldn't actually having any bearing on the NRA-ILA, which is what is doing the lobbying.

may be able to vote for board members, but you'll have to pick from equally batshitty candidates. For example, you'll probably have to choose between Peddo Teddo Nugent and ... Dave Mustaine or Hank Williams Jr. or Kid Rock or some equally hateful and washed up celebrity.

There is a pretty good chance that if you filled out a membership form and said you were Dan Gross, who lived at 1225 Eye Street in Washington, DC, and enclosed $35 they would enroll you. (Dan Gross is president of Brady Campaign and has a brother who was shot at the Empire State Building in 1997. He is probably the last person in America who would join the NRA.)

And yes voting on Board of Directors matters.

I can assure you that there was a growing uneasiness with WLP and Ted Nugent types in leadership positions.

Unfortunately, they are now seen as heroes for fighting back the recent comprehensive gun control effort.
