...disputing the facts of the polls. The fact is the proposals are supported by the overwhelming majority of Americans.
"So they have disproportionate influence on the political process."
No, it's the gun lobby that has "disproportionate influence" on a few Senators.
Background checks received a majority of the votes: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=2699325
There were even splits among Senators from the same state on regulating assault weapons: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=2699653

(68,868 posts)Democrats who lick the NRA's boots routinely get a pass from other Democrats.
Republican voters don't really give a shit about gun safety, they're more concerned about cutting taxes and screwing poor people. So, if they disagree on a gun issue with their representative, they'll dismiss it as a quibble.

...times have changed.
"Republican voters don't really give a shit about gun safety, they're more concerned about cutting taxes and screwing poor people. So, if they disagree on a gun issue with their representative, they'll dismiss it as a quibble. "
Democratic voters do, and four Republicans voted to support background checks.
The Democrats who voted no are clearly concerned.

(11,816 posts)Good studies have shown that people are far more amenable to initiatives labeled as "addressing gun violence" and far less amenable to the same thing when it's labeled "gun regulation".
We need to remember that the real goal is addressing gun violence, not regulating guns.
As we have seen over and over and over, it's important to use the right language.
