It was a very bad, watered down bill, which only gave a very small CARROT STICK of expanded backgrounds (no assault weapons ban, number of clips, etc.) and gave the gun lovers a MILE in EXPANDED RIGHTS (NRA loving National Reciprocity) as the "compromise".
No bill is better than that a very, very bad bill which would have put MORE guns on streets.

(14,337 posts)If my husband could not get a carry permit where we lived in NY, WHY should he be able to move to gun lax Florida, get a CCW, and then take that gun BACK INTO NY? No, No, No, for him, AND others.

If he is indeed an honest and responsible citizen with safety training I can see no reason why he should be denied a carry permit in NY as the state does allow some people to legally carry.
To me it seems that Florida treats all as equal under its gun laws. It doesn't matter what your skin color is or if you are poor or rich, famous or unknown. You meet the requirements and you get a carry permit. The gun laws in NY and especially in NYC seem to favor the rich, the privileged and the famous.
It's almost as if certain people in NY are considered first class citizens while many honest and responsible people have to settle for the status of a second class citizen. To me that's unacceptable but if the voters in NY are happy with the current gun laws so be it. I simply will refuse to live there and in fact will never even visit. I'm sure that will not bother you in the least.

(7,904 posts)Reciprocity was simply too big a poison pill. That alone made the rest of the Bill pointless.

(36,974 posts)The 'loophole' in it is too big ...
As under current law, transfers between family, friends, and neighbors do not require background checks. You can give or sell a gun to your brother, your neighbor, your coworker without a background check. You can post a gun for sale on the cork bulletin board at your church or your job without a background check.

So, folks could still privately sell their guns to ''... friends, family, and neighbors..." without background checks who may be felons and/or have mental issues.
And to folks at work and church that they might not even know.
That is a HUGE LOOPHOLE!

(14,337 posts)with personal experience in that the husband said that HE with his CCW could buy ME a gun at a gun show, and I wouldn't have to go through a background. IRRELEVANT that I could pass a background check. EVERYONE wanting to own or USE a gun, not just buy one, should have a background check.

Every bit of Republican obstruction is just one more
bit evidence that they are unfit to govern.
