Tucson survivor Patricia Maisch yelled, “Shame on you!” Outside of chamber said, “They have no soul"

Manchin/Toomey amendment voted down

The Senate voted down the Manchin/Toomey amendment to expand background checks for gun purchases at gun shows and online, in a vote of 54-46. The measure needed 60 votes to be included in the underlining bill. As Vice President Joe Biden called the finally tally, Tucson survivor Patricia Maisch yelled, “Shame on you!” Outside of chamber she said, “They have no soul.” ...

Four Republicans voted in favor of the measure, including Sens. Collins, McCain, Toomey, and Kirk. Four Democrats voted against it: Sens. Heitkamp, Pryor, Baucus, and Begich.

p.s. Reid HAD TO vote 'no' due to procedural rule in order to be able to bring it back to the floor in the future.

Apparently he was in the Senate during the vote today?

I'm at home so wasn't able to watch on CSpan. I'd have loved to have seen his initial reaction.

This is really a shock to me -- despite what happened in Sandy Hook, despite the majority of Americans favoring at least a background check, this didn't pass in a Democratic House?

Makes me feel sick.

EDIT -- I didn't notice the vid posted in the OP. Poor Joe -- he sounds weary.

In the days of Watergate, even in the early Reagan days, Dems held such a strong majority with moderate Repugs that this would have been a nobrainer. We have a solid GOP House and a bare majority. That's why 2014. If we can't even unite over the basics, and can't pass these things in the states from which the true power resides, it won't change. And there is no savior coming to fix it for us, no sudden media flash in the pan or global awakening that will magically fix any of it. Too many don't want to get into this stuff, as I said. But the GOP knows there is money to be made off all this, and they have millions of supporters. Of that group I consider those who refuse to do what is needed. That's all I got. See you later.

P. S. Video description of Obama's press conference on this:

Published on Apr 17, 2013

Senate Republicans, backed by rural-state Democrats, blocked legislation to tighten restrictions on the sale of firearms. Attempts to ban assault-style rifles and high capacity magazines also faced certain defeat in a series of showdown votes four months after the mass shooting in Newtown, Conn. The background check measure commanded a majority but fell short of the 60 votes needed to advance.

President Obama spoke candidly about his frustration with the defeat of the Manchin-Toomey Amendment. Obama said that the gun lobby and its allies "willfully lied about the bill." Obama was introduced by Mark Barden, the father of Sandy Hook victim Daniel Barden.

And you can count on those lies having made their way to the voters who showed up to protest at state houses, at senate offices and flooded their voicemail, email, mail boxes and faxes to command them to vote against this bill. It was the people that made this fail. It is the people who will change it.

Vice President Joe Biden told a former congressional aide Tuesday during a visit to the Capitol building that the Senate was just two votes short of reaching the 60-vote threshold needed to pass a gun reform bill through the chamber.
