(28,158 posts)So far zero of them have been anything nefarious.
Locally they're now calling them "unknown" packages. I guess they're trying to mix it up a bit.

(7,932 posts)If it turns out to be nothing, no one was hurt and maybe some dirty deals didn't get done because the Capital was evacuated. But if it does turn out to be something, then no one got hurt because they evacuated.

However, I question the wisdom of the media sensationalizing each forgotten backpack at bus stops and schools. Things like that do more harm than good in my eyes. Folks like myself tend to become immune to the drama, and others become so afraid they're ready to report the 80 year old lady who forgot her purse in the shopping cart by mistake.

(9,474 posts)Man with backpack detained because he was acting suspiciously. Backpack contained sealed envelopes, which he was delivering personally (against protocol). He was detained in the Hart Senate Office Building. He managed to get past a security checkpoint before being detained.

As this Boston bombing may turn out to reflect badly on Republicans, I would not be surprised if they sent threatening envelopes to themselves as pre-emptive damage control. Plus, an envelope or package, with no deadly results, is just what you'd expect to be faked.
