My subjective, general-public judgment and hunch says 70-30

70 percent chance it was a domestic far right group, 30 percent it was a Islamic group. With a tiny chance it was something completely different, like a lone loon that somehow had the skill to pull this off. But it's highly improbable, in my subjective opinion.

And it's perfectly OK for me to voice the aforementioned subjective opinion. Deal with it.

My bet: One or two people with loose ties to a RW group. Group disavows them, etc. In other words, a repeat of OKC.

Alex Jones and right wing hate media is acting suspicious.
They are trying too hard to deflect.
The actions of right wing hate media re-enforce the OP's view.

But it was pointed out that this wasn't the typical government building target so now I'm thinking its a James Holmes/Adam Lanza type.

ANYTHING to try to avoid confronting the idea that RW terrorism is an increasing problem in this country.........

to extremes.

So yes I immediately thought it was a sick protest against gun control.

But now I am not so sure because the marathon does seem an odd target when you could hit something more directly connected to the government and make a more obvious point.

We've often heard of these unhinged types with pipe bombs though. One just got prosecuted locally. If there is some sort of perverted body count contest out there, a marathon makes sense.

10. I am thinking a lone wolf individual, not a group

two simple bombs, nothing indicating the presence or need for more than one person.

Ideology could go either way - hard to tell when talking about the actions of an individual.

I'm not afraid to speculate. I'd put the chances at 100% that these terrorist bombings in Boston were perpetrated by a domestic far right group.

By "group" I mean probably less than three individuals involved. Most likely one or two.

Run of the mill suicide jacket bombers achieve much more explosive power and casualties on a regular basis.

This looks like essentially two gunpowder pipe bombs (using a pressure cooker instead of a pipe) on either simple timers or remote. I'm thinking simple timers, since if they were manually detonated, then the sequencing made no sense.

It doesn't take a tremendous amount of skill to do that, and I would bet easily half of DU members have the minimal requisite knowledge to rig up something similar.

What it takes is the motivation to do so, and there is nothing like a big dollop of paranoid nutjobbery of one sort or another to get someone motivated.

It could be some nut that did it just because he could. IMHO the potential nut factor is large.
