2 men removed from United flight from Boston to Chicago

Two men were removed from United Flight 636 before it took off from Boston to Chicago this morning, according to the airline and other passengers aboard the flight.

The men were questioned by authorities and returned to the plane, only to be removed again after at least one passenger complained they were acting "suspicious," the passengers said after they arrived at O'Hare International Airport. Spokesmen for the airport and airline declined comment.

Passenger Rich Siok, 31, of Elk Grove, said he didn't notice the two men — one of whom was in his row -- before they were taken off the plane. They looked like "average citizens," he said.

But Siok, who also finished the marathon Monday, said he and others began to notice the two men acting "suspicious" after they were allowed back on the plane. The men, who were rows apart, began talking in a different language and apparently using head gestures and their hands to communicate, he said.

How unfortunate.

Of course, the media is complicit in this in their rush to blame "Saudi nationals" as being repsonsible.

sitting in the same row with siok, who didn't even notice him.

this is beyond disgusting. what, exactly, were these men doing that was "suspicious"?? actually, the talking another language apparently didn't occur until after they had been removed and interrogated by the fbi. so what, exactly, were they doing beforehand?

wow--they were talking to each other across an aisle!! WITH THEIR HANDS!!! (guess no italians are going to be allowed to fly anymore??)

this thing some people have about others speaking another language has always pissed me off. Growing up, it sounded like the tower of babel around me, didn't bother me in the least, still doesn't. My best friend and I made up a language in high school, mixed up with latin, which we used whenever we were in public. Quel horror!!

at least some of the comments after the article were intelligent.

than I've heard Americans complaining about the varying accents of their countrymen.

day in, day out. I wasn't talking ACCENTS, I was talking about how poorly many americans use what is supposed to be their native language (and this includes news readers on local tv stations). reading comprehension seems to be lacking in many, as well as the ability to write something approaching comprehensible english (some of the stuff that passes for "journalism", let alone fiction, is almost beyond belief.)

Wed Apr 17, 2013, 01:57 PM
Apr 2013

makes it sound very much like fact and if your reverence for the English language

is what you claim, I would imagine you'd be aware of that.

So sorry you disapprove of our way of speaking, but pray tell, what obligates you

to listen to our "crap" as you so politely put it?...Do you live in the States?

If so, you might recall the old saying "you can't go home again" and then erase it

from your mind. If not, why on earth do you "have to" endure the horror of Americans

speaking?...Do you lack a switch to turn off whatever listening device you're using?

My second question relates to the concept of courtesy and it is this:

Do you REALIZE that you are on an American-based board with a membership rate that is likely

95 percent American, with that, most would agree, making you something of a "guest" here?

My feeling, and it IS shared by many here, is that this forum is about POLITICS, specifically American politics,

and given that we're generous enough to allow foreigners, not only their opinions but in some

cases their own forums, we'd appreciate their not abusing the situation by taking

gratuitous swipes at us at every opportunity.

Thanks so much, and do have a nice day!

I find it interesting that you believe only non-natives can find the linguistic abuses annoying, irritating and displeasing. too bad we don't have a prof. higgins moment for this, to help you understand:

proper use of language (whichever language it is) makes discussion easier.

That's a tad inappropriate, wouldn't you say?...Or are you so pathetically

elitist, such an Anglophile, you've decided you're not really "one of us", LOL?

You see, dear, if you actually knew anything about Britain, or the language patterns

of cultures, generally, you'd know that EVERY society possesses

a "vernacular", a slang vocabulary, and that it can deviate substantially from the standard.

Maybe checking out the example I gave Lantern Waste will help you understand.

Failing that, I'd suggest you either get out more, or take a Linguistics course.

P. S. The video, accompanied by a suggestion of some need to "understand"

on my part is rich. You see, dear, not only did my Graduate Record Examinations

rank my language skills as superior (92nd percentile) but I've made a successful living as a writer.

Have a nice day.

and if you lived here and realized how VERY diverse this country is,

racially, ethnically, religiously, I think you'd realize your mistake.

My spouse and I fly in and out of O'Hare in Chicago on a regular basis.

Up until very recently, it was the largest airport in the country

and one hears EVERY imaginable "accent" and language imaginable.

Boston is also very diverse, and became even more so last weekend

because of the plethora of international visitors who came for the Marathon.

to anyone but certain native peoples indigenous to South Boston.

The use of a rare form of sign language is also commonly practiced among certain groups present among the native peoples indigenous to South Boston.

A good friend of mine is a native of South Boston, and he frequently slips between the English and South Bostonese languages. For some unknown reason, this most often occurs when we are trading beers and shots of tequila in the local cantina.

Sometimes, when no matter how hard I try, I cannot understand what he is saying, I ask his wife, also a dear friend, who understands South Bostonese fairly well, what he is trying to say. Her normal reply to this question is "How the fuck should I know?". Whereupon my friend from South Boston raises his right hand with a South Boston sign language gesture, and the cantinero, a kindly and much loved Mexican man who speaks no English, but who understands a bit of South Bostonese sign language, smiles, and brings us another round.

To all the folks in Boston.

Cheehs!
