Same as New York, Oklahoma City, etc..

The whole "character of cities" racket is a racket.

Anyone talking about how tough Boston is should provide a list of all the wussified cities that would go all to pieces.

When tragedy strikes we, as creatures, tend to deal with it more pragmatically than we assumed we would. Thus when tragedy strikes people often outperform expectations.

Where are these cities where, in the face of a bombing, everyone just closes up shop and commits mass-suicide?

(The Bush administration was a jarring exception to all of this. They really did crack up on the spot, devolving into cowardly ninnies.)
