differently? Ratings don't care if they come from admiration or outrage. And I am sure he was handed his talking points du jour.

Funny, my first thoughts - actually all of my thoughts so far - are about what someone else here at DU pointed out - this stuff happens all over the world and I click on it, read it, feel bad, and then click on something else. It never occurred to me to try and guess who is responsible - so many possibilities. The Atlanta incident where an innocent man was arrested taught me a lesson.

9/11? Much more of an evidence trail. And I think of "conspiracy theories" as "alternative explanations" - much less dismissive, ya know.

5. Leaving politics out of things-I am a New Yorker, 9-11 scared me, and bankrupted America
Tue Apr 16, 2013, 07:33 AM
Apr 2013

I go to parades and events and this scared me.
Hope the aftermath doesn't have what happened after 9-11

but the political people and terrorists and mass shooters and killers in all these events do what they intend-
either to score a political point(look how Joe is doing that here) or to score an intended consequence, or message (like Dorner was doing)
terror=terrorizing=creating fear, unease, anarchy, etc.

It reminds me that Bloomberg was correct after Sandy in saying the NY Marathan should go on
and we should go forward.
After 9-11, for 8 years, we didn't move at all, and Iraq moved us backwards.

Forward.

though until they get proper security that can indeed prevent things, I won't be going to the Thanksgiving parade again. I will watch it on TV.From up to a few years ago, since I was a kid I went to everyone, recently it depended, but won't do it, not if one has to fear a crowd.

They can prevent these things and give people their freedom back.

I do want to see a physical presence.
feel free to disagree.

And I have been flipping the channels and radio and they have people they are talking to on the street, and I haven't heard on any station radio or tv, anyone say they don't feel better seeing a bigger presence here in NYC this morning.

feel free to disagree.

One of the better things about coming to America after travel in other parts of the world was that US airports didn't used to have machine gun toting police, like you saw at Orley as early as the 1960s, or machine gun toting soldiers on street corners, as has always been the case in much of Latin America. Now, the periphery has become the center, with a vengence. It tells me that we've slipped into just another scared Colonial power.

No, a show of force in our own country doesn't make me feel better.

Tue Apr 16, 2013, 08:12 AM

before 9-11, this wasn't a problem.

Now here, it is a day by day happening. Anytime, anyplace, anyreason

It really matters little the reason, it is happening.

BTW, historically, in times of trouble, here in the USA, people in uniform are much wanted.
The Police, the Fireman, the EMS worker, all good union people. All putting themselves in danger to protect people they don't even know. They too are average people.
They are not perfect, but no human is perfect.

Political party or politics makes no difference.
And this doesn't equate to any war.

Sorry, but to me
"If you you see something, report it, say something", damn right I will.

The regular people in the world, all people cannot function if they are not safe by some
singular or two or small group attempting to speak for the majority of people.

And I have seen the man on the street interviews this morning in NYC, all different people different views, races, sex, etc. Haven't seen one person saying they want the security to disappear.

this is a bi-partisian fear that terrorists bring.

One can say no to both terrrorism, and individual Zimmerman's with gun
But to say no to them, means systems in place to stop them.
And there could be.

And yes, it's a shame the Norman Rockwell days are over.
BUT-the Norman Rockwell days NEVER were here in the first place.
And in the US history, there has been to many segments of the population, terrorism in a day to day existent.

See the Jackie Robinson movie for examples of that.
Back a few decades, terrrorists came in sheets with eyeholes and torches in their hands.
Something was done about that, and those things don't happen much anymore.
It can be stopped.

Do the math. Hell, how many people have died in terror attacks since 911? Give me a number!

Paranoia is not the answer! How many parades since 911 have had someone killed? But you are ready to skip them!

Hiding at home for an event that will never happen is just what the terrorists want! Congrats!

I am taking off shoes and belts and waiting in line for 30 minutes for a flight because of your logic. Thanks!

Maybe you are just too emotional, in a week post again!

20. 9-11 will never happen again
Tue Apr 16, 2013, 08:38 AM

Because people now have stopped those methods from happening.
Because of, not inspite of, the security methods in place.

Sacrificing 10 minutes at the airport to arrive safely hours later somewhere, is well worth it.

Wish they had the security to stop it
(ACTUALLY Richard Clarke knew what was coming and it wasn't stopped.
Richard Clarke now says things about drones, and well, consistency says If I liked what Richard said after 9-11, then I like what he says now.
9-11 could have been avoided.

Security stops that type of event from happening.
We can stop the mass shootings that happen in public places.

I am one who thinks its worth it.

Because, to use a very, bad analogy, but anyhow-if the marathaners all had guns, they wouldn't have stopped it, nor could they race with the weight of guns/bullets on them.

But in a secure arena, they could

btw-DON'T know where you are from. As a NYer, we have been frisked going into the legendary Madison Square Garden since the 70s.
Now, they were looking for tape recorders and booze back then (and drugs), but we readily agreed to it, if we wanted to go to any of the concerts there.
(I don't think they did that for the suits going into basketball games).

So here in NYC, we accept it.

From happening for the last 12 years! How many have we had! Provide numbers!
You want to cave to the fear, I do not!
You are the reason there are warrant less wire taps and Feds reading emails!

Tue Apr 16, 2013, 08:53 AM

Bobby Kennedy gave the OK to wiretap Dr. King.
This is nothing new.

and this type of event isn't stopped because there is not proper security.

Guns and bullets in the hands of private people legal and illegal mean those events can't be stopped.

There are ways to stop it.

and it has nothing to do with politics.

If (another NYC example) IF there was the security then that there is now in NYC, the Son of Sam might have been stopped by having cameras pick him out very early on.
Instead, and I was there, I was effected by it, hell, my father in law said I looked like the sketch somewhat, I was riding the trains back then, on dates back then, etc.
And damn yes, I was personally scared. So was my wife who wasn't my wife back then.
Being on the train, or in the car late night back then, damn right we were scared.

Damn right we would have been happy as would of the people who were killed and hurt and the millions of others terrorized by him, we would have been happy if today's security picked him out back then.

(As it was, good old fashioned NYC detective work did capture him because of a mundane traffic ticket. Registration and tracking of things is a good idea.(cars in this instance).
