Wearable technology: The bra designed to shock attackers

"The Delhi gang rape was the trigger. But also the numbness of women - and law-makers against this social menace. It was high time we women needed a change."

Manisha Mohan is an aeronautical engineering student at SRM University in the Indian city of Chennai.

She is also a young woman in a country that was thrown into chaos following the brutal gang rape of a 23-year-old student in Delhi in December, 2012.

Together with fellow students Niladhri Basu Bal and Rimpi Tripathi, she decided to use her technical skills to try and do something to help protect women like her.

After talking to women living in hostels about their experiences of harassment - called Eve-teasing in India - they developed a bra designed to deliver a 3800kv electric shock to any would-be rapist.

It would have to be lined with rubber, I'd guess, on the part that touches the skin but I'm not sure even that would keep them safe.

7. Sounds good on its face, but

three observations...

1) I've looked over the website and the information on whether or not this is real is contradictory.

2) If it is real, it looks like it would just cause great pain, which would surely be followed by anger and elevated violence.

3) I hate the thought of a rapist who could be carrying a disease getting his blood inside of a woman that way. Obviously rape is a whole different hell, so I guess it depends on the disease and such.

Anyway, that's just my mind wandering around trying to think this thing through...

Just wondering what your criteria are.

And if you've ever seen a man incapacitated by pain in the groin, I'd say this just might give you enough time to get away in some instances.

Semen or blood, infection vectors don't care how they get there.

Mostly I just like it for the cringe-inducing quality.

20. Rape is a manifestation of violence

and so I thought, if some guy gets jabbed in his nether regions, this thing could go from rape straight into killing. Both are violence but one has a measure of finality.

Having been on the end of a severe groin injury (no, not rape, forgetting to wear cup in karate class), yes, it is possible and would be a good thing if it allows the woman time to get away. I like the idea of a rapist getting impaled in the offending organ as much as the next guy. Seems very effective, not to mention karmic.

Is that a true statement that semen and blood have an equal rate of infection transmission? I always assumed blood was greater. But such things are certainly not my forte.

I'd think just carrying around a picture of that thing and claiming to have one "on hand" so to speak, would be deterent enough...

You can have millions of volts running through you and so long as the amperage is very low, you won't feel a thing.

Under ohm's law, isn't the amperage going to be directly proportional to the voltage, because your resistance will be constant?

Say you have very high voltage and also very high impedance (ohms) , your current will not be very high. If you have high voltage and very low impedance, your current will be very high. So high voltage will only equal high current with low impedance.

A 1 amp circuit could have a million volts and a million ohms of impedance. Whereas a 50 amp circuit could have 500 volts and 10 ohms of impedance.

a) a would be molestor
b) yourself
c) an innocent passerby who has stepped backwards incautiously

I submit that b is probably much the greatest.
