(6,342 posts)Cell service was disrupted in Boston shortly after the bombs went off because everyone tried to get on their cell phone at the same time.
It could also be an unrelated outage.

(17,086 posts)Boston.com was very slow - I was on it at as the event happened. Not an internet thing so much as server overload on some sites, I think.

(14,944 posts)The site says they are temporarily having issues because of what happened in Boston today.

(11,303 posts)with the attack but some DU pages were 'frozen', couldn't get on some other sites too.
They did say cell phone service was being shut down so maybe it had something to do with the signals.

(31,706 posts)...your connectivity depends on the type of "pipe" you're connected to and how many other people are connected to it. In a city; especially an apartment complex or office building you may be sharing an internet "pipeline" with thousands of others. In a story such as today's bombing where there are few details, people will now flock to the internet to find out any new details.
I encountered some problems getting on DU this afternoon and thought that maybe the site would have to move to Defcon 1 to handle all the people checking in and posting...
